Because he never holds a gun, it shows how strong willed and brave he is...  in this one event reveals a lot about this character, it shows that he never backs down and sticks to his morals, and his beliefs throughout the entire movie, even when he was sent to jail he never backed down and he stayed true to his religion

This scene shows us as the audience Desmond's nature of valuing a life over social status and the war. His religion promotes the idea that killing is a sin.
We can identify this because we know that the Japanese were enemies of Desmond but he still chooses to save his life regardless of their differences due to Desmond's strong beliefs.
Some film techniques that work well together to show Desmond's caring and positive nature in this particular scene would be mid shot and dialogue, as they promote body language and show us as viewers the transition from confusion and fear betweeen the two people to shock and trust.
