Most often it is used by people that are legally blind. It is a part of blind culture because it shows everyone that “I can’t see well. I may need help,” and usually people are helpful. It helps us to get around easier, and it is far more common than a guide dog. In the visually impaired community, we usually carry our canes when we know we will need it’s help or when we will be in a situation where we may need other people to know that we are legally blind, especially since most of us don’t look blind. A cane can be especially effective when there are lots of us using canes. If there is only one of us using a cane, we are usually ignored when we go to a public area. People will try to avoid us, but together, we are pretty difficult to ignore which means we are usually able to get help.

Most of us have some sight, so a monocular helps us to see things from a distance. (think binoculars) These are less of a sign that we can’t see and are more of a helpful tool. It is something that we use a lot and can be helpful in many situations, from the classroom, to looking at the menu at a fast food place. It allows us to function easier, and it’s also fun to get a whole bunch of blind kids trying to read something while using a mini telescope. A lot of the time, we’re more comfortable using them when we’re in a group, rather than when we’re the only visually impaired person in the vicinity. It makes us stand out a little, and we sometimes get weird looks.

In Church culture I am considered a returned missionary which can mean a lot of things. The generalizations that are made in the culture is that I am going to get married really soon, that I know the scriptures really well, and that all that I am going to talk to you about is my experience as a missionary. I also feel that people expect a lot of me when they hear that I am returned missionary. If other people have a tag and have been missionaries it often sparks stories amongst those people. Cis men are at the top of the social stratification hierarchy, and they don’t have periods; therefore it’s uncomfortable for anyone else to discuss periods. Most of my heritage comes from Europe, specifically England and Hungary. My grandma was born and raised in northern England, so I have picked up a few of her speech patterns and learned from her perspective as an immigrant. I have always been proud of my heritage, which has definitely shaped my self-identity. However, even if I can find pride in my British and Hungarian ancestry, to anyone else I am still just another white person, and I need to be aware of that. If I can’t acknowledge my racial identity, then I am also a part of the problem. Additionally, I can acknowledge the fact that I can be proud of my heritage and still acknowledge that my ancestors weren’t perfect.
