I love the phonics survey. As a T2T student who did not take traditional reading classes and did not excel at sounds and phonics when I was younger, the phonics survey allows me to visualize and assess a child's strengths and weaknesses. By being able to mark the specific sounds that they miss, I can then work on those specific sounds with them and assess them later on. Overall, the phonics survey matters because it gives us vital information to help our students further and to their advantage.

The Phonics Survey is an assessment tool used to identify a student’s understanding of letter-sound relationships and their ability to decode words and it is incredibly helpful. It matters because it provides teachers with detailed insight into which phonics patterns a student has mastered and where gaps in knowledge exist. This information is essential for planning targeted instruction that meets each learner’s specific needs, ensuring that foundational reading skills are solidly developed. The phonics survey is helpful because it allows educators to group students for differentiated instruction, monitor progress over time, and intervene early when decoding difficulties arise. By using the results of a phonics survey, teachers can provide focused, evidence-based lessons that strengthen students’ reading accuracy, fluency, and overall literacy growth.

It is beneficial for students to have a wide vocabulary because it helps with understanding text. Students may be good decoders but without vocabulary knowledge, they won't be able to comprehend what they read. This test will be able to identify students that have a lower vocabulary knowledge to evaluate for intervention.

This test has a Form A and Form B. In Grade 1, Form A and Form B are given at separate times throughout the year (Spring & EOY) to determine improvement over time. In other grades, Form A is considered a pretest and Form B is considered a post test to determine progress. This test is beneficial to use to help determine students' progress and evaluate students that may need strategic or intensive vocabulary support.

I feel like this is something that should be used and tracked with every unit for almost every subject. It can be a major help so that you can see where your students are having a hard time understanding lessons that you have covered and can let you know just exactly with what parts they are struggling with so it is something you can address. ( this would look like a test after lets say covering your CVC words to see that they are comprehending what you are teaching to them)

Progress Monitoring (for example, we look at letter sounds and name recognition in K) measures their skill level at different points of the year. Each quarter, we like to see the K students progress their skills, and depending on their struggles or progress, can identify which small group instruction they need placed in, or if other supports are needed to be put into place.
