The success of international students in their first year of university is important for setting the tone for the completion of their university experience. However, due to the drastic differences between the teaching practices of the west compared to everywhere else, many international students struggle to compete at the collegiate level (Telbis, Helgeson, & Kingsbury, 2014). For the international students, they state issues such as adequate housing, finances, and academic assistance while the professors feel that they struggle due to a lack of language ability and low social mixing with the general school population (Korobova & Starobin, 2015). For my proposed study, I would like to focus on the factors contributing to the success of first-year international students studying in western universities.

RESEARCH APPROACH

The research approach which best fits this study and will find the solutions to the research questions is doing a case study Creswell (2003) explains that case study is doing an in-depth look at a process which is bounded by time. In this case, the researcher is looking ata international students bound by their first year of the western university experience. For this study, the collective case study, where multiple cases are studied to illustrate the issue will be conducted (Creswell & Poth, 2018). So by following individuals from a small number of different universities, the reader will have a more thorough understanding of the issue. This will also give an opportunity for triangulation as the results from each case can be compared to each other (Creswell & Poth, 2018).

DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS

Merriam and Tisdell (2016) explain that for a case study, the researcher is the “primary instrument of data collection” The methods related to case study are face-to-face interviews, observations and document review. For this study, the primary tool will be the interview, seconded by document review. The purpose of the interview is to get a “first-person narrative” of the experience (Bogdan & Biklen in Merriam and Tisdell, 2016). Since multiple cases are being used, the best method for analysis is the within-case analysis followed by a cross-case analysis (Creswell & Poth, 2018). This is where each case is described in detail and then later compared to the others.
