In my opinion, I have not had any issues with this. Its like if you learn multiplication by lattice or long hand... at least you know how to do it. But PEMDAS has been around the longest and most of us use it.

It a tool to help remember. Not the concept.

As an upper elementary teacher, I think it is important for secondary teachers to understand that some students require longer time in certain skills to master, the time frame given prevents mastery. These students organization skills, fine motor skills, developmental, self regulation skills have declined every year and are having to spend more time on these skills.

As elementary teachers, we want you to know a lot of kindergartners come in not knowing numbers. K-2 are introducing new skills across the board and doing our best to close the gaps before they move forward. We have them the whole day, plan and teach 4 subjects each day. We deal with difficult students in our room all day, not just a 45 minute class period, which can take away from instruction. Gradual transition, such as homework, responsibility switches from parent to student. Parent support does decrease in middle school and high school, possibly due to the rigor changing from when they were in school.

Parents don't see that academics are important
We do DO fact fluency daily
HW is optional
STEMscopes is still new & primary needs to be aligned
Curriculum isn't consistent
Resources aren't consistent (Flocabulary)
We do what yall are asking us
We ALSO wish the kids would stop using their fingers
Nothing covers everything (curriculum wise)

As a secondary teacher, I think it's important that elementary teachers understood....that concepts will continue to build on each other even through their HS career. Gaps they have in the lower levels can have big repercussions to future learning
