In the beginning of the book In Cold Blood it starts with a description of Holcomb Kansas. (It's remote and isolated there are lots of boarded-up storefronts and sad cafes.) We meet a couple of characters at the beginning of the book, Perry Edward Smith, Richard Hickcock , Herb and Bonnie Clutter. In the beginning of the book we learn some background information on each character we met. We also met the murders and they seem like normal people at the moment and I'm excited to read more and learn more.
Mrs. H says: They SEEM like normal people...what turns a person into a "cold-blooded murderer"? Hmmm

My first impression of the book is that it is very interesting. It takes place in Holcomb, Kansas. In the book it has shared the characters: Perry Edward Smith, Richard HIckock, Dick, etc. When reading this book it gives us the imagery about the crime and beginning life in Kansas. How it is telling us who gets murdered and then portraying them as normal people. We began to learn information on the characters we met.
Mrs H. says: Which murderer do you dislike the least? or which one do you like the most?

For my Basic and Description and first thoughts... This seems like an interesting book that takes place in Holcomb, Arkansas. So far in the book we have been told about a few main characters being: Perry Edward Smith, Richard HIckock, the Clutter family and a few other smaller characters. In the book right now we are finding out the backgrounds of each character and we find out the main that got murdered is going to be one of the Clutters, but its sad because we are learning how much he has done in his lifetime. Also right now where I am at we are following the Murderers and it seems like they are normal people for now.
Mrs. H says: ARkansas? Geography much?

My first impression of the book is it is very descriptive Truman Capote is a very descriptive writer and uses imagery to help us understand where and what type of town Holcomb is and what the people are like. It gives background information on the people and the victims. So far this book reminds me of a podcast called S town from the creators/ produces of serial.
Mrs. H says: I LOVED the S-Town podcasts! Good comparison.

Did the author create believable characters?
Yes, the author did create believable characters since in cold blood is a true story. It wasn't hard for the author to make them believable too the reader. So they're all believable and very realistic.

Is the book optimistic or pessimistic?
This book is very pessimistic and also optimistic. There is really no hope in the book but when they have a lead on the murderer it's very optimistic with the people. The reason for that is because the who book is about murder and trying to catch them. I think that at the end of the book it's going to be very optimistic.

If your family moved to the place where the book is set, would you be happy about it? Why or why not?

I think if my family moved to Holcomb we would be happy. The first reason I know that we would be happy is they have a nice community (except for the murderers) that everyone sees each other as equal and it does not matter how rich they are. Another reason that Holcomb is good is they have a lot for entertainment like movies and a golf course. Also I know my parents would like it because I know once they retire they are moving to a smaller town on the coast so I know they like smaller coast.

I neglected my business, spent more money than I earned, wrote bad checks, and in the end became a thief. For this last I was sent to the penitentiary...."
Say: This is talking about how Dick started off drinking and that led him to criminal behavior
Means: It shows criminal behavior from Dick and how it can link to the murders.
Matters: When you start off doing petty crime it can get worse and worse and potentially land you in prison.

On our way to Arizona We got jobs waiting there."

1.This quote is Dick trying to lie about why he is town and what he is doing.(Lying about the murder)
2.For the book this quote is very important because it is showing how Dick is the leader of the group making up their plan and it also shows how easy it is for them to get away with the murder.
3.This quote matters overall because it shows how easy people who are not that smart, can get away with something. Dick's plan was just to drive and kill someone then go to Mexico which is a very simple plan and show's that a dumb person can get away with stuff.
