What I Believe

Many people believe that the reason children lash out in violent ways is because of the violent things they are exposed to. Those things include video games. Most video games these days include some type of violence (punching, hitting, shooting, etc.). These types of video games should definitely be censored for young kids. However, I do not believe that kids that are exposed to violent video games are more prone to becoming violent. Just because a child plays a game that includes shooting people, does not mean that they will attempt to shoot someone in real life.

http://www.massgeneral.org/News/newsarticle.aspx?id=3929
There have been many researches conducted to find out whether or not kids that play violent video games have any correlation with being violent in real life. In 2004, a team of researchers studied 1,254 7th and 8th graders in South Carolina and Pennsylvania. They observed what the kids were playing, how much time they played, and the possible relationship to delinquent behavior. The researchers stated that there were correlations between playing violent games and self-reported physical fights, particularly with greater amounts of time played. However, this only occurred in a small percentage of children that already exhibited aggressive traits and a high stress level.

Many say that kids can learn bad habits and behavior from playing violent or inappropriate video games. However, banning video games for minors would be a mistake. This is because violent video games allow people to release their stress and anger in the game, leading to less real world aggression. A peer-reviewed stated that 61.9% of boys play violent games to help them relax. Another 47.8% said that it helped them forget their problems. The other 45.4% said that it helped them get their anger out.
