How do we disrupt the "traditional teaching" in which the teacher is the expert and adheres strictly to the curriculum that supports standardized tests while the student receives the knowledge? We know that this teaching method is outdated and that our students deserve a culturally responsive approach and yet we are still tied to standards/standardized testing. I know that even little shifts can have a positive impact AND it can feel overwhelming/frustrating to be fighting against a system that is not set up in this way.

encourage students to use their cultural capital - draw from your students' own experiences and allow them voice

Culturally Responsive Math

Math Manipulatives - instead of just randomly using multiple colored counters in math class, we could purposefully celebrate our students’ cultures. We can make Mexican American students feel special by using red, white, and green counters and point out that those are the colors of the Mexican flag. Another way to celebrate Mexican culture in math is using “frijoles” for counters.

This stood out to me because it is a really creative and feasible way to make students feel like their culture is celebrated and has a place in the classroom community. I don't think I would have ever thought to incorporate culture into math this way.

This article was helpful because it provided simple, but thoughtful and intention ways on how we can ensure that we are making math more culturally responsive.

Example: 3 Act Tasks prompt students to analyze and solve a real-life problem by using their estimation skills and collaborating with their peers. Routines such as Which One Does Not Belong prompt students to make connections to real life, their culture, math concepts, and other content areas
