I was born and raised in Austin, Texas. I am the third of five kids, with two brothers and two sisters. I grew up taking dance classes of all styles, and was involved in musical theatre and drill team in high school. I loved learning Sign Language and French in high school. I have always loved to travel; I took study abroad trips every chance I got in high school. I’m working to continue that in college. I am also continuing my French education at UT, and I am hopefully minoring in it. Last year I went to TCU, but transferred to UT this fall. My major is Government, and I want to go to law school after college. My goal is to work for the FBI or as a public defender.

Everyone follows the safety rules, and everyone has a job that they do efficiently to contribute to the group. Everyone even wears the same uniform because everyone is an equal part of the group. Everyone is also making the exact same product in the exact same way. There is an organized and planned system that everyone follows. This system is used all over the world and revolutionized manufacturing. However, there can be negative effects on the workers, so it is an example of the positive and negative effects of universalism.

The Invisible Hand by Adam Smith is an example of one of the first individualist books. It explained the theory of capitalism in its earliest forms, which is based on individualism. It states that if everyone looks out for themselves, everything will get done efficiently. It is a theory based solely on self interest and self reliance, and has been the basis of western culture and prosperity for decades.

Individualism is a "sink or swim" focused ideology, that requires self-reliance and independence. John Wayne was revered for his tough, individualistic characters that represented what many view to be the American Dream and American ideals. 20th century America was particularly individualist, especially in film and television. A more communitarian person would have taken him to group swim classes at the Y.

Wheatsville Co-Op, or any co-op, is an example of communitarianism because all of the members contribute, and it is owned by the people who shop there, and everyone contributes. Many people who buy membership prefer the communal structure than the traditional structure. Each member owns a tiny portion of the store, and they are therefore cooperating to achieve a common goal of a certain level of health and quality of food. This removes the risk of "ownership" while ensuring that the needs of the group are met.

After Jonas Salk created the polio vaccine, he was asked why he did not patent it, to which he replied "would you patent the sun?" He was recognizing that a lot more can be done when we all put our heads together, and share the information we have. This is especially true in studies like science and medicine. None of the advancements that we know of today would exist if scientists kept their information to themselves. He is so spoiled and privileged that he treats those around him with disrespect and apathy. He is selfish toward his subjects, whom he is supposed to be looking out for. Yzma's famous line "you should have thought of that before you became peasants" is the culmination the negative effects of their ascribed positions in life. Cuzco is then saved by the peasant whose life he was trying to ruin, and learns his lesson.

Jehovah’s witnesses
Jehovah’s witnesses believe in following the will of God, to achieve salvation they must not only believe in God, but also strictly follow his rules. Salvation is earned through obedience. They also believe in an “end of times,” these are all very outside driven beliefs and practices. They do not believe in having control over their destiny. This goes to the extreme of receiving blood transfusions, even in a life or death situation. They believe in submitting to the will of God, if God wanted them to live, He would save them.

Childhood is a time when external forces control your life. Everything that happens to you is contingent on who your parent(s) are, where you were born and what socioeconomic status you were born into. We rarely hear of billionaires who were self-made at the age of ten. I think that’s why young adulthood is such a difficult time, we have to finally switch to using our inside forces, instead of just going along with what happens to us. Childhood is all about doing what you are told, and adulthood is so difficult because we aren't used to doing what we want to do and relying on ourselves for everything.

Cinderella
Cinderella had an evil step mother and evil step sisters. She had no control over her life, and had to constantly do what other people said. Until one day, she decided to take matters into her own hands and go to the ball. She made herself a dress and worked hard to get ready, despite all the other chores she had. In the end, she broke out of the room her step mother had locked her in, proved the slipper fit, and married her prince. She stopped letting outside forces control her life and it paid off.

Chicken Run
The movie chicken run is the perfect example of inside forces. The chickens, upon discovering that they will be made into pie, begin to devise a plan to escape their coop and certain death. Facing an evil entrepreneur, they create an elaborate plan to escape, which ultimately ends in the chickens “flying.” This is an example of inside forces in and of itself, since according to nature chickens shouldn’t be able to fly. Chickens, according to nature are supposed to be eaten and kept in captivity, and they went against nature to survive.

School schedules are an example of valuing chronological time. We meet up for a prescribed amount of time, and whether or not we finish everything we were going to learn or fully understand it, we leave and go to the next class. This creates the need for things like office hours and TAs. There are so many students with such a range of possibilities, that it would be impossible to make sure that every single person understands before the end of the class.

For the most part, people will set an amount of time or perhaps a distance for which they will exercise, and will do exactly that amount of exercise no matter how they feel at the end of it. They will say "I will do 30 minutes on the treadmill today" and that is all they do. For some, they just work out until they feel they will puke, or just until they feel they have gotten enough exercise that day. Exercise guidelines focus on sequential time, usually the number of minutes per week or day.

Amazon Prime Now is an example of "just on time" delivery. You can set the delivery of your products up to the hour, as opposed to just getting it as soon as possible. You can order it to be delivered in five hours when you get home from work, or within the hour. online ordering in general is a great way to prevent excess and only have as much as you need. When I go to the grocery store I get more food than I need because I don't want to go to the trouble of going back to the store any time soon. With delivery services like amazon and instacart I only order what I need.

Sit-down restaurants are an example of synchronic time because it focuses on the quality of time, not quantity. Your food comes after you order, when you need it. You sit down and talk with friends, sometimes for hours, until somebody needs to go home. (excluding reservation only restaurants) you usually just walk in when you are hungry, and leave when you are full or have run out of conversation. The servers do not say "well you have been here for two hours your time is up." It focuses on just getting everything that you want to get done, and not on how much time it takes.
