However, in “Breaking Tradition,” the author effectively supports the claim that the war transformed women’s lives by outlining specific details back in the 1850s and 1860s’ such as expectations and the different jobs of women. In “A Family Affair,” the authors only scratch the surface by writing about women helping with the war and women being involved with the Red Cross.

Body 1: In the last paragraph of both passages, the authors both discussed how society changed with women’s rights. Paragraph ten says in “Breaking Tradition” that “The Civil war, and the absence of home from many men, brought profound challenges and opportunities to all women.” Paragraph five of “A Family Affair” says “Women who had never dreamed of anything but being wives and homemakers realized that they could work outside the home, too.”

Body 2:

While “A Family Affair” does not describe any roles of the woman before the war and only describes how they worked in the war and how this changed the aspects of their lives. “Women were expected to keep busy at home and church and to avoid heavy labor, business, and politics.” (Breaking Tradition) “The men who formed their traditional labor source were being drafted into military service. So,in 1943, the government circulated recruiting posters encouraging women to step outside their traditional roles as mothers and wives and join the war effort.”

B2:Describe the effectiveness of the evidence used in “Breaking Tradition” and compare it to the latter use of evidence in “A Family Affair”. “Married immigrant women who settled on Midwestern farms helped with heavy farm chores, such as clearing fields and handling livestock.” “By war’s end, a woman’s place in American society had changed drastically. Women who had never dreamed of being anything but wives and homemakers realized that they could work outside the home, too”

Conclusion: Restate how “Breaking Tradition” shows more evidence of how the roles of women changed rather than “A Family Affair”.

Women’s rights is a very important subject and one that should always be talked about. In the essay “Breaking Tradition” the author, Kathleen Ernst, goes on about how the war changed woman. Ernst is very descriptive and talks about a lot more subjects with women's rights and jobs, however in “Family Affairs” Gina Deangelis and Lisa Ballinger only write about how the women volunteered and how they wanted to help because of the propaganda posters.

B1) in the passages the authors show that women were not treated equally compared to men in the Civil War and WW2. for example, in “breaking tradition”, the author says,” ..ladies live under the guidance of fathers, husbands, or male relatives.” meaning that the women are not idependent and can not live on their owns. And in the passage,”family affairs,” the author says,” once the men came back the women were expected to go back to their roles at home.” meaning that the men were thought of of doing anything better than women.

Opening: “Breaking Tradition” by Kathleen Ernst shows how women of the 1840s and the 1850s broke traditional roles in families when the war broke out and even when the war had vanished, while “A Family Affair” by Gina Deangelis and Lisa Ballinger demonstrates the roles in women's families during the war.

Thesis: Both passages are effective by showing how the war transformed women's life, but Kathleen Ernst provides a better explanation of women’s roles in life, not just those actions relating to the war.

E2: “They found themselves becoming a vital part of the war effort.”
I2: Women saw the need the effects of the war were causing.

Body 2:
P1: “Breaking Tradition” provides an explanation of roles in women’s life, not just actions related to the war, while “A Family Affair” only explains roles in women’s life during the war.
