His hair made him look tuff, and it was his trademark. His hair labeled him as a greaser, but he didn't have to use much grease on it.  It says in the story that since his hair was like his trademark, it was the one thing he was proud of. He should be proud that he has "tough" people in his life who would take a beating for him. I'm glad that he's proud of his hair, but the question is why? Does his hair "label" who is or who he was? I don't know yet but having close family in his life is the main thing he should be proud of. I also think that Ponyboy is proud of his personality. Only think this because he's not the "average" greaser, he more than that.
