         <description><![CDATA[<div>A group Whittier Republicans encouraged Nixon to run for congress. He was up against five-term Liberal Democratic Jerry Voorhis, however, that did not stop him from running. On November 1946, Nixon win a seat in the U.S House of Representatives. During his first term he was assigned to the selected Committee on Foreign Aid. After that he went to Europe to report on the newly enacted Marshall Plan. He was also a member of the House UnAmerican Activities Committee. Within this he took up a leading role in the investigation of Alger Hiss. In 1950, Nixon successfully then ran for U.S Senate against Democrat Helen Gahagan Douglas. Within this he got nicknamed " Tricky Dick" </div>]]></description>

However, 2 months before the November election, the New York Post reported stated that Nixon had a secret "slush fund" provided by campaign donors for his personal use. Eisenhower was deciding to remove Nixon however he realized he had no chance of winning without having Nixon on his team. </div>]]></description>

IN November 1960, Nixon narrowly lost the presidential election, by only 120,00 votes. AS the Electoral College put their vote on John. F. Kennedy, who receive 3003 votes and Nixon received 219 votes. </div>]]></description>
