Tennis Court Oath - June 20, 1789

The Tennis Court Oath was created by the members of the third estate and also members from the second and first estate. It was also signed by 576 members out of the 577 members and it was near the Palace of Versailles. The meeting of the estates general was locked by accident but the members of the third estate believed that they were doing it to mess up their rights. They stayed near a indoor tennis court and said that "the voice of the nation was heard" and they were successful, they were also joined by nobles and clergy. The voting was also unfair because the clergy and nobles would just vote for what the King wanted so the other vote wouldn't matter. They argued that votes should be by poll because they had more representatives than the other two estates.

Some problems that happened were the dept and food shortages.Another problem was that the Legislative Assembly was made up of middle class members which gave even more power to the upper classes over the third class, the people that were in the Legislative Assembly lacked experience.Maximilien and the Jacobins take control of the government and they destroy the the monarchy and created the French Republic.Maximilen believed that extreme terror was needed to avoid a counter revolution. This over 200,000 people arrested and 40,000 people were killed. The Guillotine was also used during the Reign of Terror. It works by cranking the blade all the way up and than you let it go and it cuts off the head of the person.
