The Principle of Separation of Powers

Separation of powers divides the amount of responsibilities and duties each branch of the government has. This relates to our case because the power was split among the branches. This principle is similar to checks in balances because the congress and executive branch balanced out and had different powers. This made sure there was no abuse of power.

The Principle of Checks and Balances

A principle that affects this case is checks and balances. This principle allow two branches to check on the other branch. This allows them to make sure that they balance the power, and the other branch doesn't create or do anything unconstitutional. Therefore, this principle gave president Obama to place a check on the congress by vetoing the bill. President Obama was given the power in Article 1 Section 7 which allowed him to veto a law proposed by congress. Then the Articles says that the congress can check the power by overriding the veto which also occurred in our case.

The Principle of Popular Sovereignty

Popular sovereignty allows for the government to change, over the will of the people. This principle of popular sovereignty affected if whether suing Saudi Arabia was going to become a law or not, because even if the president vetoed the bill, the people had to have a say. Which meant that if the people pushed and lobbied for it, the bill would likely become a law. This relates to our case because even though the president didn't want this bill passed, the people wanted the bill passed, and it was.

There was a bill brought up to the congress, and this bill involved suing Saudi Arabia, because many citizens believe that Saudi Arabia caused 9/11. However, Obama vetoed the bill. The congress had the complex majority necessary to overide Obama's vet. This case is about whether Americans should have the right to sue Saudi Arabia for the acts of terror on 9/11. A group named Al-Qaeda and leader, Osama Bin Laden planned and put the attacks into action. Since congress passed the law which allows American citizens to sue Saudi Arabia, and overrode the president, the Americans now have the right to sue the Saudi Arabians.
