Initial thoughts - I’m excited to get started on with this course and this task! I’m a bit nervous as digital media definitely isn’t my strongest area and I don’t have a lot of experience in it, however I’m looking forward to learning more about and developing the necessary skills ! I love the sound of the first task as I love marketing and promoting things and I already have so many ideas that I think would work well !

The main message of this promotional video is that there is to show the many layers to Irish dance, and show that it is both a lot of fun and a lot of work. I want to expose the audience to all aspects of irish dance, who otherwise might not know what it entails.

I want them to be slightly scared and shocked at the amount of work and effort that goes into the dance, but also be delighted and feel happy about the fun that can be had and the community around dancing.

To do this I will need to convey the harder parts of Irish dance in a darker, almost slightly intimidating way. I want this promotional video to show that even Irish dance has serious and tough elements to it.

The best colours i could use to do this would be darker, more muted tones like black, white and maybe some greys. This will make these elements of the video seem more serious and intimidating. To then balance this out, I would like to convey the fun and happy parts of Irish dance with bright colours to evoke happiness and light. Mainly use of the colour green to convey health, freshness and peacefulness.

Overall I want the audience to see the positive influence of Irish Dance on their health and happiness, whilst also showing that it is a serious sport that can entail a lot of effort and grit.

This ad campaign showcases women being strong and fit. The tone and colors used in this video are similar to what I am aiming to do my own promotional video, along with brighter scenes to highlight the fun and enjoyment of Irish Dance as well. I think the serious nature and dark color scheme of this, makes women fitness seem like a legitimate and serious topic, which is partially the aim and tone I want for my own video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-jFk6lUZ6Fg

Clark, S 2012, ‘Being 'Good at Sport': Talent, Ability and Young Women's Sporting Participation’, Sociology, vol. 46, no. 6, pp. 1178–1193.

This journal article discusses influences on women's participation in sport, and why they are so underrepresented in sport. The study found that as girls aged their participation rates dropped, and they need more motivation and encouragement to participate. The article also mentioned that community and friendship were highly motivating factors for young girls participating in sports. This source was useful to me as it provided me with insights into why women participate in sport and what motivates them. This informed me as to what aspects of irish dance would be best to promote in my promotional video, and also made me aware that female participation amongst young women was such a major issue.

Fink, JS 2015, ‘Female athletes, women's sport, and the sport media commercial complex: Have we really “come a long way, baby”?’, Sport Management Review, vol. 18, no. 3, pp. 331–342.

This journal article discusses how despite female sporting levels being at an all time high, there is still a major disparity in it represention in media and commercials. The article explores why this disparity exists and the impact less coverage of women's sport has on female fitness and participation rates. This source was useful as it prompted me to make people more aware of female athletes and inspired me to create a promotional video that held the same amount of seriousness and importance to it that would be found in a similar advert for male sporting. This source also made me aware of what people, mainly women, wanted to see in sports advertisement and inspired me to create more discussion around female athletes.

Mollenhauer, J 2017, ‘Irish Dancing in Sydney: Global Patterns, Local Practices’, Journal of Intercultural Studies, vol. 38, no. 2, pp. 213–227

This article discusses the integration of irish culture and irish dance into Australian society and explains the differences between dance in Ireland and Australia. The article also explores the demographics engaging with irsh dance and culture within Australia and the influence this integration had on society. This source was useful to my promotional video as it informed me of the lack of awareness and popularity, and brought to my attention some of the reasons as to why Irish dance is not a common style of dance, such as lack of promotion and understanding of the dance. In addition to this, this source also discusses the thriving community surrounding irish dance within Australia and the positive influences it has on the dancers lives, which is also relevant to the aim of my video.

Mollenhauer, Jeanette 2015, ‘Competitive Irish dance: Culture and community’, Australasian Journal of Irish Studies, The, vol. 15, pp. 35–54

This source was useful to my research as it discusses the expansion of irish dance throughout Australia in recent years and explores the community that has formed around the sport. It provided me with useful insights into the demographics involved in this community and the impact this community has on the culture surrounding Irish dance. It was also useful as it helped to identify values and parts of Irish dance that would appeal to the demographic my promotional video is aimed at.

Lucetta Tsai, C-T 2015, ‘Media systems and their effects on women's sport participation in Taiwan’, Sport, Education and Society, vol. 20, no. 2, pp. 283–283.

This article explores media systems and promotional methods surrounding womens sport, and the impact it has on participation rates. Whilst this study was conducted in Taiwan, the principles and findings are still relevant to women's sport more generally. The research found that when media encourages women to participate, through highlighting their achievements and actively promoting women's sports, participation rates increase. While these findings are based off a limited amount of sports and in Taiwan, it still offers useful insights. The aim of my promotional video was to highlight Irish dance and get more girls involved in the sport, and this source shows that by highlighting talent and advertising the benefits, girls are more likely to participate.

Attention : I will aim to grab the audiences attention by starting my promotional video with a dark and intense scene of Irish dancing, and minimal noise. I want to set the tone as serious, before showing the more lighthearted side of dancing. I want to start my video with an aesthetic similar to the fitness motivation video I've attached on this padlet. I want the serious and intense feeling to grab peoples attention and want to know more.

Interest : I am going to create interest amongst the target audience by showcasing other girls, within the same age range as my target audeince, Irish dancing and mentioning what they enjoy about it. This will make the video more relatable to my target audience, and so hopefully generate more interest.

Desire: I want to instill a feeling of strength and motivation in the viewer when thinking about Irish dance, making them feel see it as a serious sport. once this motivation is inspired, I also want to make the viewer feel happy and excited, by showing the fun and community aspects of Irish Dance. In doing this I also want the viewer to ring the video more relatable and be able to imagine themselves participating.

Action: After watching the video I want the audience to be more informed about what Irish Dance entails. I want them to motivated, inspired and excited, with a different perspective on the dance. And hopefully feel as though they want to take up Irish Dance.

I decided on a monochromatic color scheme, using various shades of green to not only relate it back to being Irish, but also to instill feeling of growth and health, which I want to my audience to associate with Irish Dance. I will be using these colors along side some darker black/grey shades in my video to create contrast in the mood of the video.

I wanted all the headings on my website to be bold and noticeable, which is why I have voted for large, bold block letters. I chose Charlemagne specifically as it as an older, almost Celtic look to it, which again relates back to Irish Dance. I then chose Verdana Regular for all other text on the website as I want it to be simple and easy to read. All the text will be black as well, so it readable amongst the green.

The promotional video will open with silent a slow black and white montage of a few female Irish dancers dancing, sweating, out of breath ect... It will contain dramatic close up shots and only show the dancers individually. Gradually a voice over will be begin of the various dancers talking about the hard work and struggles of Irish Dance. I.e " it can be tiring" or " sometimes you just want to give up".

Then the voice over will switch to the same dancers talking about why they love Irish Dance and how it makes them feel. This will be accompanied with bright scenes, filled with more green and colorful scenes, and picture the dancers together laughing and having a good time, displaying a fun sense of community.

After this second voice over finishes the footage will begin to fade before cutting to text that Says " Its ..." then several words will flash in place of the dots such as ; hard work, tiring, painful, dedication, teamwork, community, fun, happiness, strength, fitness. Before finally stopping on Irish Dance. so the text will read " It's Irish Dance " and then a small website prompt to find out more information.
