Beyond Our Solar System (article from Nasa)

Initially I wanted to find out about other planets or life other than Earth. I decided to go to Nasa because they have many articles and an entire page on their website dedicated to “Beyond Our Solar System”. I began reading this article and came across a link (the cosmic distance scale) which is an interactive article shows how tiny the milky way really is. I learned about the nearest galaxy to us which contains not much more than what they referred to as diffuse nebulae, globular and open clusters, and planetary nebulae. It may seem that these galaxies are relatively close, however I found out it would take 749 million years to get there. I never knew that our milky way was so big compared to Earth, but so tiny compared to everything else in space. I never knew that there were different solar systems in our galaxy, and that we knew about the other galaxies.

Stephen Hawking-Predictions of the Future (article)

I read an article from Cambridge News which focused on Stephen Hawking and his predictions for the future. I came across this article when looking for how much time we have before we should start thinking about moving to a new planet. I found this article and was intrigued by what he had to say. All my life scientists have said we have billions of years before the world will end, and it had never phased me. Now Stephen Hawking is telling us that we have 600 years until the world will be taken over by technology. He also says by that time we should have spread out into space, so that doesn't necessarily mean the end of the human race. I now realise that those scientists were saying that the sun will absorb the earth by that time, however due to our advancements in technology, it is leading us closer to the end.

Smithsonian- Intimate Guide to the Cosmos (book pg. 161)

I chose this book because it looked like an informational book that would give me the rundown of everything in space. It is a very dense book filled with information from our solar system and our place among the stars, to the Milky Way and beyond. I wasn’t going to read this entire book, let alone the fact that I didn’t have enough time to, however I went to a specific part of the book that I was interested in. The section that I read was about was the question of whether or not our universe is the only one. According to my prior knowledge I was lead to believe that we were in one galaxy out of many, however all the galaxies were in one giant universe. After reading this section I was introduced to the theory that the four dimensions we experience everyday (height, width, and depth, and the fourth dimension, time) weren’t the only ones. It explains how, what if our four-dimensional Universe floats in a fifth dimension, a metadimension. This overarching metadimension has our four dimensions bound together on what they call a cosmological membrane, more typically referred to as brane. This also suggests that there are other branes like this floating in the metadimension, and if they were to collide, it would cause a Big Bang.

Elon Musk's Intercity Rocket Travel (article)

I read this article in hopes of finding out more about the logistical plan of how we would leave, in the case that the world is ending sooner than later. Elon Musk founded SpaceX in 2002 and has continued to grow its market ever since. I was aware that he wanted to be able to send people to mars and begin colonization on the Red Planet, however I learned more about that after reading this article. He states that his new rocket will still carry 100 people, but also get from point A to point B in an hour. Not only is that efficient, but it is a multipurpose vehicle with a rapid launch rate, which would reduce mission and manufacturing costs.

Interstellar (movie)

I chose this movie to use because it is such a good example of how the future could be, or what the world could come to. It gives us a visual representation of how things may happen, for example in the beginning of the movie it shows scenes of dust storms, and crop fires, making the world uninhabitable. While this is happening Nasa is working on ways to transport the population to a new home via wormhole. This movie is fiction, however it is based around real facts. I watched this movie a few years ago, and it has certainly opened my eyes to a better understanding of the thoughts and pressures of scientists working to find a new place to live.
