What?: Ishmael and his friends were caught by the rebels. They got to witness first hand how exactly these people treated those who were not on their side. Half of the large group was picked to be recruited, while the other half was going to be killed off by the first half. Gunshots were suddenly fired and everyone scattered. Ishmael hid until he heard the rebels apparently leave and he reunited with all of his friends.

So What?: On top of being hungry to the point of starving and desperate to survive, Ishmael was petrified when he and his friends were caught and brought right back to the village they were trying to run from. He feared that he would've been killed, his friends, anyone close to him.

Now What?: I'm predicting that Ishmael and his friends will be captured again, but possibly by a different group, as the first group probably would kill them if they found the kids again.

However, a man from Mattru Jong recognized them and told the group that they were alright, and they got to live. He's developed to the point where he could've been considered to be emotionless towards anything that wasn't war-like. However, his occupation being a soldier was suddenly cut short as he and a few younger soldiers were let off from their duties, being given the opportunity to start anew in a large, busy city, in order to start school and get their life together. They were sent to the very large city of Freetown, which just so happened to be Sierra Leone's capital. The group immediately disliked it, every group of boys untrusting and hostile toward one another. Ishmael's group got into a violent attack with another group of boys who used to fight for the RUF. People were injured on both sides, some even hospitalized.

Because of the fight and events from the original rehabilitation center, Ishmael, Mambu, Alhaji, and their group of boys were moved to Benin House, a different rehabilitation center in Kissy Town. They were moved to the house because the people who worked at the original house were terrified of them. The people at the Benin House were no different. The nurses and staff members were beaten, had stuff thrown at them, were chased around. The boys would even fight each other. They fought until they exhausted themselves, and then went to eat something. Ishmael eventually had himself sent to the hospital because of an incident where he punched a wall and made his hand bleed terribly. As he was being treated by the nurse, he never answered any of her questions and eventually pushed himself to the point where he was fainting. After a few days in the hospital, he was free to leave and visited the big city with his friends as a way of helping himself recover.

However, he couldn't avoid his nurse for very long as she was the one to finally reapproach him. She gave him a soft drink and offered for him to come visit her anytime, opening the opportunity for teasing comments from Alhaji and Mambu. He eventually decided to pay her a visit, and she properly introduced herself as Esther, and offered the idea of becoming friends. They decided to leave it alone for a few days, and, when Ishmael was called back in a few days later, Esther gave him a box that contained a Walkman and cassette. Ishmael got to listen to it contently while Esther ran a checkup on him. During her checkup, she discovered scars from bullet wound on his shin, and pressed him to tell the story of how he got them. Their friendship progressed from there to the point where he would willingly share dreams that he's had, as well as helping him learn English(?)

Ishmael was terrified. Because he was forced to survive on very little on his own prior to becoming a soldier in the war, he was afraid that he was going to push away the hospitality that his uncle and his family would be offering out of habit. He worried about the horrible dreams and nightmares he was inflicted with from the war influence. Esther would reassure him, but he didn't feel like it was enough. Regardless, a few days later, Ishmael was forced to announce to his closest friends that he was leaving the center, knowing fully well he probably wouldn't see most of them ever again. After saying his final farewells, as well as getting Esther's address so they could still hang out after he left, Ishmael made his way to his family, his home.

He was very nervous about heading there, as he's heard of many terrible things, such as violence-ridden streets, hostility, ignorance, and the like. When he got there, it was exactly the opposite. He got to meet many people from around the world, who spoke about their struggles and experiences. It gave Ishmael the chance to make the sufferings and heartache known in places outside of their countries.
