Written By: Laura Numeroff
Illustrated By: Felicia Bond
Published: 2016
Fiction
This book is great for beginning readers! This is the ninth book of the series by Numeroff. The story is all about how if you give a mouse a brownie, he will want something else. He starts with a brownie, then wants ice cream, and then needs a spoon. The story goes on from there! It's an adventure that any reader can be engaged in. Also, it's a fun book and the pictures help the reader make connections to the text.

Written by: Leilani Sparrow
Illustrated By: Dan Taylor
*Published: 2015
Fiction
This story is about a little boy who takes part in all his firsts for his first day of school. In the story he shares how his day starts, each activity that happens in his day, and it ends with him grabbing his things, so he can return tomorrow for another fun day at school. This book is filled with great illustrations that captivate the reader and ultimately allows readers to use the pictures to understand what is happening in the story.

This story undoubtedly connects to children. Children have to attend school every day, and I think that this book is a great book for early readers. The subject is about school, and that is the primary reason that readers can connect. Whether it be a student who is in their earlier years of school or approaching say third or fourth grade, they can relate to the little boy (bear) in the story.

Written By: Arnold Lobel
Published: 1981
Fiction
This book is all about a little boy elephant whose parents leave for sea, and end up getting lost. The baby elephant gets very sad, and later meets his Uncle Elephant who comes to visit. The two spend the next several days together, and while the baby elephant does experience his sad moment in the beginning of the story he gets to enjoy many adventures with his uncle and they get to bond with one another. In the end of the story, the baby elephants’ parents return.

This story I feel may connect to its readers but that I feel can be dependent on whether the reader has their parents in their life. The primary purpose behind this story I feel is that Lobel wants his readers to see the value of all family. Even those we may not be as close to. Because it is in the rough or sad moments that we realize how important all family is. The subject matter focuses on the different adventures the baby elephant and his uncle get to share with one another.

Written By: Jez Alborough
Published: 2005
Fiction
This picture book is all about the pictures. Alborough tells the story with the pictures and there are only five words used throughout the story. In the beginning of the story, the monkey is walking and says "small". He then approaches a rock, and climbs it and says, "tall". Here one of his fellow animal friends approaches and then the little monkey feels small again when he sees how tall his lizard friend is. Through the story his friends help him to feel talk when he feels like he is small. He has encounters with the lizard, a lion, an elephant, and a giraffe. When he is on top of the giraffe he falls, and his mother catches him. This is when we learn the little monkeys name, which turns out to be Bobo. At the end of the story it appears as though Bobo realizes by the help of his friends and almost falling that he is just the size he is supposed to be.

It is about a bee who doesn't really belong. Most people are afraid of him because he could sting them. Later, he ends up finding a wig and puts it on, and others think he is a boy. Jerry gets to go to school and make so many friends. He is so thrilled and is enjoying making friends! Later, he is being celebrated as the grand marshal, but then..... his wig is blown away by the wind. The end of the story does have a surprise, but you have to read it to find out!

Written By: Patricia Polacco
Published:2012
Fiction
This story is based on the authors life. The story is about Patricia who wants to be an artist. Her artistic talent gets recognized by her teacher Mr. Donavan, and he recommends her to the high school art teacher, Miss Chew. Miss Chew and Patricia become very close and Patricia is acknowledged by Miss Chew for her ability and even tells her that she reads negative space. Later in the story, Mr. Donavan leaves due to his fathers passing, and Patricia gets a substitute teacher, Mrs. Spaulding. During a test, Mrs. Spaulding takes up Patricias test, even though she isn't finished. Normally, Mr. Donavan gives Patricia extra time. Ultimately, the sub tells Patricia that she is basically wasting her time in art when really she could be studying. In the end however, it is is determined that Patricia reads patters, not words. The story is great for readers and it shows just how one teacher can impact a child's life!

Also, O'Connor uses visual humor throughout the book to help captivate his readers. The imagination of having a triceratops as a pet makes readers excited! The book is a fun-filled imaginative book. The only issue, they don’t have a kite to participate. However, Papa Bear helps them and makes them a kite. Then, Mama helps as well with some finishing touches. Next, Brother, Sister, and Papa attend the contest. They do receive some critiques about how their kite won’t win because it’s a simple kite compared to the fancy kites that other contestants have. They end up winning the contest, because after some strong wind all the other kites tear, except for Brother and Sisters big red kite.
