How Can we Support ELL Students with learning exceptionalities?

UDL - UDL is based around the principal that what is necessary for some can be beneficial for all. It is rooted in the work of architects that planned buildings with accessibility in mind for people with physical disabilities. They realized that improvements for people in wheelchairs such as access ramps also benefitted people on bikes, people with children’s strollers, people using walkers and other people that might not be able to walk up stairs. This was extended to education by educators that realized that teaching strategies, technologies and tools such as speech to text software and subtitles that responded to the special needs of a group of students could enhance the learning for all students in the classroom.

DI - Differentiated Instruction is understanding the individual student’s strengths and needs within the classroom. Every student learns differently and as a teacher it is important to understand their interests, strengths, needs and learning styles. Differentiated Instructions really gets at the heart of knowing your students and allows for teaching the same material to all students using a variety of instructional strategies or presenting the lesson at various levels of difficulty based on each students readiness.

The Education Act, s.1, defines an exceptional pupil as "a pupil whose behavioural, communicational, intellectual, physical or multiple exceptionalities are such that he or she is considered to need placement in a special education program". The term "exceptional" is only used to describe students who have been so designated through the Identification, Placement and Review Committee (IPRC) process.
