Adaptations of the Temperate Deciduous Forest

Trees in this biome have adapted to live in each season of the year. Some trees lose their leaves and go into dormancy. Evergreen trees are green all year. Trees here have fuller and more open leaves to absorb more sunlight during the summer. During the winter the leaves furl themselves up as to not lose nutrients. Maple trees have winged seeds, so that when the leaves float to the ground they land far enough away to not be shaded by other trees. The Eurasian Red Squirrel, a primary consumer of this biome, has adapted to the scarcity of food in winter months by burying its food underground to dig up in the winter. This adaptation helps the ecosystem because if the squirrel forgets about a hole, the seeds and nuts in that whole could grow as plants. The Rufus-legged owl has adapted to the temperate deciduous forest by having odd legs allowing for easy capture of prey. Normally owls have three claws in the front and one in the back. However, this owl has two front facing claws and two back facing claws. This helps the owl grab on to tree branches. As you can see, many animals have adapted to this biome in unique ways that are worth learning about.

This biome is different from other terrestrial biomes as it has four equal distinct seasons. The weather rarely goes to extremes, and the average temperature is fifty degrees Fahrenheit. The average rainfall is between thirty to sixty inches a year. The plant life provides lush shelter for the plethora of animals that live here. The thick tree canopies provide birds and other tree dwelling animals shelter, and the ground is shaded to provide dens for other animals. The trees of this biome are unique. Here you can find evergreen trees, which stay green all year long! As you can see the temperate deciduous forest is an interesting place to learn about.

The trees provide shelter to the forest floor, causing it to be cooler. The floor isn't cool enough to damage the organisms, but just makes less contact with the warm sunlight, making it harder for small sun loving plants to grow. Some plants have adapted to this by making their seeds float away from the mother plant, so they can grow in an area with more sun.

In a Temperate Deciduous Forest there is about 75 to 125 centimeters of rain a year. This isn't as much as a rain forest, but it is enough to sustain the organisms that live in this forest. The rain isn't able to fall all the way to the ground because of the tall trees. However, the rain falls far enough to supply water to all the plants. This is another reason for the maple tree's adaptation of floating seeds, so the seeds can migrate to where more water hits the ground.

One ecological service that the Temperate Deciduous Forest biome provides is lumber. The abundance of trees can be cut down and used to make other things such as houses. The large amount of trees also provide a large amount of oxygen. The trees have to do photosynthesis to survive and that releases oxygen into the air for us to breath.

Temperate Deciduous Forests are valuable in the economic perspective because of the lumber that they supply. This could fuel an industry for a rather long time, even though deforestation serves a threat to the forest. There are so many trees in Temperate Deciduous Forests and they cover almost 22% of the Earth's surface!
