George Washington Parke Curtis began building a mansion across the river from the half finished capital. The estate was 1,100 acres and had been passed down from generation to generation. The family was then forced out because the Union army planned on seizing the estate. The estate was put up for sale, the government bought it and used it as burial sights when the Civil War brought thousands of casualties with nowhere to bury the people.

The Arlington National Cemetery, in Arlington Virginia, is the resting place for more than 400,000 fallen soldiers. Marble headstones fill up the 624 acres of land. Some of these headstones are marked with the names of the fallen soldiers, and others are not marked due to not having identification of the person who passed away. These headstones are arranged in long rows covering the cemetery.

One rhetorical device that is present in the memorial is enumeratio. This is when a point is made with details. It is apparent that in regard to the details of the Cemetery, the rows of graves are set up like this for organizational purposes. Parallelism is also used because of how all of the graves have the similar structure. The only differences in the headstones are the names on them.

Washington did a lot of things through the war. The mansion had been passed down in his family from generation to generation. The cemetery being on their property was created by the government but Washington's daughter kept it going. This shows because it was continued on the property after she and her husband bought it back.

One stylistic element that sticks out is how all of the gravestones are similar for the soldiers. This shows that no soldier was valued more than the man or women buried next to them. It is showing that all of the men and women who fought for freedom are equal.
