The end result can justify the experiment because the monkeys can serve a purpose as models for primate biology, biomedical research, and helping research human diseases. The two monkeys are now 6 years old living happy lives, they're also growing less dependent on artificial food sources and are having more natural food sources, which shows signs of them having the chance to live full fledged lives in the wild!

So, what was the scientific process to clone the monkeys? Scientists used similar techniques that were used to create Dolly the Sheep, the first ever cloned animal. Scientists extracted the nuclei from an aborted macaque fetal cell (donor cell). Then they removed the old nuclei from another monkey's ova and put in the new nuclei. After that, they inserted the new egg cells into birthing monkeys.

Zhong Zhong and Hua Hua were the 79th attempt of the Chinese Academy of Science trying to clone a monkey. In 2017, Zhong Zhong was born in November and Hua Hua was born December. There were two other monkeys that were born but they failed to survive. Qiang Sun of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Institute of Neuroscience said, "We tried several different methods, but only one worked. There was much failure before we found a way to successfully clone a monkey."
