The philosopher Alain de Botton describes five reasons for art and its function in the world. In the first place, he illustrates art as a source of hope, in which the prettiness of art operates as a coping mechanism for humanity against problems. Then, he mentions the reason of validation and normalization of pain and sadness because these are inherent to human nature. In addition, he describes art as a balance between our lives and desires, considering what lacks in our lives and what we admire. Also, he explains how art functions as a means of appreciation, since we tend to ignore the simple things in life and its highlights. Finally, he discusses the role of propaganda in art, that is, the variety of attitudes we need about life itself as encouragement for us to be the best version of ourselves. In short, Alain de Botton illustrates a variety of functions that art can portray in our lives, such as hope, normalization of pain, balance, appreciation and propaganda.
