Civil Rights are a set of rights that are granted to everyone regardless of skin color. It is designed to protect individuals, especially people of color, from discrimination.
Examples on civil rights include the right to vote, the right to a public education, the right to a fair trial etc.

1865; First steps toward official segregation in form of 'Black codes'. Laws that dictated the lives of black people, including where they could work and live, were passed throughout the South.
1915; Oklahoma is the first state to segregate phone booths.
