-Sacred sites are of great importance for the preservation of their culture. They represent places connected to history and cultural heritage, as well as sources of spirituality and meaning. Preserving these sites is crucial for maintaining cultural identity and the continuity of Indigenous traditions. The protection of sacred sites is a responsibility that lies both with the Indigenous community and with society as a whole.

-The Indigenous guard has the purpose of protecting the community and its territory from external threats and internal conflicts, ensuring collective security, defending rights, and strengthening cultural identity and Indigenous autonomy. The guard is responsible for monitoring and safeguarding the territory, implementing prevention and protection measures, and promoting education and Indigenous culture.

-To preserve their culture, the community carries out practices that honor the memory of their deceased members, including visits to sacred sites. Over time, they have also adapted to ensure their continuity, incorporating celebrations such as the Day of the Little Candles.

We have always been farming families. We arrived in these lands of Bajo Cauca and Northeast Antioquia after being left without a place to farm, plagued by drought, land dispossession, and racial discrimination. That's why, in the first half of the 20th century, hundreds of our relatives began to leave their ancestral territory and set out to explore new horizons. The Gold and riches in colonial times made it the chosen place to put down roots; the fertility of the soil and the richness of its waters were the main reasons for staying.

The sites fundamental to their beliefs are generally places related to nature. Protecting these places is a form of protection and resistance for the local flora and fauna, as it also restricts external interventions that aim to invade protected areas. This protection is effective thanks to the Indigenous Guard of the same reserve, who watch over not only the physical protection of the inhabitants but also the territory. They also participate in the PSA, which are mechanisms of the Antioquia Government that seek to compensate communities with economic bonuses for the conservation of strategic ecosystems.

The Cañamomo y Lomaprieta Indigenous Resguardo in Colombia

To understand the resguardo’s actions, we must look at their history. The history of their territory is a struggle to defend and recover the environment that has been taken from them. Despite centuries of colonization and the exploitation of their natural resources in the modern era, the Cañamomo y Lomaprieta people have maintained a deep connection with Mother Earth. This worldview is the root of their environmental commitment. For this reason, they have developed initiatives that are not just projects but a continuation of their ancestral traditions, which seek balance with nature and the protection of their ancestors' natural heritage.

The resguardo has developed a comprehensive environmental strategic plan to consolidate awareness among its inhabitants about caring for their surroundings. This plan is divided into seven key lines of action: water, solid waste management, risk management, environmental education, biodiversity, climate change, and mining.

Among their most notable achievements are: in a remarkable effort by the community, they planted forty thousand trees to restore vegetation in sacred sites like the Carbunco and Sinifaná hills, which had been cleared for livestock and agriculture. This action not only restores the ecosystem but also protects their places of spiritual value.

They have formed a Territorial Risk Management Committee. This committee, in collaboration with traditional authorities and community leaders, works to protect the community from natural disasters, a problem that is becoming increasingly common due to climate change.

To ensure access to potable water, the resguardo has strengthened community aqueducts by providing supplies such as pipes and tanks. This action is vital for the well-being of their people.

They consistently work to raise community awareness, education, and sensitization to the value of environmental preservation. The transfer of this knowledge to future generations ensures that the ecological legacy is maintained.

The Zenú indigenous people have left a profound legacy in gastronomy, not only in their territory but throughout Colombia. Their ancestral knowledge of corn, cassava, yams, and chili peppers is not simply a matter of recipes, but rather expressions of identity and cultural resistance. Each dish preserves stories, rituals, and ways of life that have adapted without losing their roots. Zenú cuisine reminds us that food is not only nourishment for the body, but also a bridge to the land, to memory, and to the community. To rescue and value these contributions is to recognize that in every traditional dish there are centuries of indigenous wisdom that continue to nourish our culture.

Mining in Colombia has a serious impact on Indigenous populations, especially illegal mining, which causes forced displacement, violence, water and air pollution, and environmental degradation of their traditional territories. Illegal mining, financed by armed groups, threatens the cultural and physical survival of communities, affects their health, traditional practices, and right to land, and is one of the main causes of environmental degradation in the Colombian Amazon.

The Wayuu people live in the department of La Guajira. The Wayuu are known for their textile work. For the Wayuu, weaving is more than a cultural practice and the heritage of their ancestors. It is a way to see and express life as they feel it and want it. It is an art to think and enjoy. Looking at their many weavings shows the spirit that guides their action and thought.

I want to say something important about their culture: their relation with water. The survival and culture of the Wayuu are very connected with water in a desert region. Women are the ones who look for this vital resource. Many of their rituals and daily practices are about the care and tribute to water.

By Mateo López
