The Estates General Meeting was a gathering of all representatives, from all three estates, to get approval of the tax reform the people of the third estate wanted, since they had an unequal share they contributed. The meeting was held on May 5, 1789, at Versailles. It was the first estates meeting in 175 years.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/pvVfTKTU0F7PwitPayddExzsoWGRquo8u5FwGRH1WE6iuVzgMllh59Y60qc4rcVvmuEmwDypyUFcVG4wWJfC-Gh2VXojDM-8=w1440-h789

Their goal was to enact laws that were in favor of the french people. They struggled to win over the other two estates.
Royal Family Tries To Escape France

As the Women's March raged on, the only thing the royal family could do was follow their orders. The King and Queen were dragged to Paris with the mob. They rode in a carriage that was accompanied by the beheaded heads of their guards. In Paris they were held captive until the king decided he needed to regain control of his country, which he couldn't do as he was a prisoner of Paris. The king and queen, along with their children, disguised as peasants and walked out. They almost would've made it out safely it weren't for the people who stopped and asked for their passport. Almost immediately the people recognized his passport signature as the kings. The king thought they would bow before him and try to protect him, that didn't happen. The people were angered and dragged them back to Paris. The people don't trust him anymore since they saw his escape as a way of betrayal.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/qJ-pCZ96X6BV7Z1OkEWwd-o53RUKF9EEgU-FXt4I9mN3_O0YO1ItMYTygBMBJhrY6Mm5d0mh4j4MNOfNcYTshOwqTqnQIKYogg=w2277-h1028

As word spreads of the king being imprisoned by his own people in Paris, Austria and Prussia are not happy about it. The queen's brother was the absolute ruler of Austria, France's enemy at the time, and the people have already believed that the royal family was already calling for them to help against the revolution. Austria and Prussia new3 the revolutionary ideals would most likely be a threat to their nations. Since they wanted to keep their absolute rule, they decided to threaten France to return their king to the throne and nothing would happen to them. Thinking that this idea will convince the people to return him and give up on their revolution, the people immediately ordered war on them in return, even though they were in the middle of a revolution.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/KUoefvf06-5QwNaJKA0kiG8w24MEaPNoOdmJB_zUIO4RJV3JcgLTiKO98pY-9MMnNV1jmU1042ZGHjtT5lWt0s_pV876KZQa=w360-h300

King Louis was tried for treason because he was hoping France would lose the war against Austria and be returned to his rightful throne. The people knew the only punishment for treason, was death. The king was brought to the guillotine, the national razor that had quickly beheaded people with no pain. As he was brought up the steps to the razor, he was going to give a speech, but the roaring of drums cut him out. After he had been beheaded the people cheered, marking this as a sign that the major thing in their way was now vanquished.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-VZjtIDIYoTECdNOt689odbbcPCPbQoNrYM92kbo8BxrDK6BFN5iDKazwdsMOg8VpfRm4V8HS7Z6sCU884PDhW7KlsWcqO9hdg=w2277-h1028

Robespierre's Reign of Terror

With the new invention of the guillotine, killing was easy and efficient in these times. Mass amounts of people were killed during this year.. Robespierre had been convinced that anyone could be planning to overthrow and stop the revolution, so anyone who was suspected was automatically killed. People fell into a state of fear. Neighbors ratted each other out for the tiniest clues that they weren't on board with the revolution. People who weren't guilty at all for this kind of thinking, had no shot against the charge of death. The trials were fast and always ended in the same verdict of guilty.

https://imgglb.padletcdn.com/v13/image?t=c_limit,dpr_1,h_587,w_360&url=https%3A%2F%2Fpadlet-artifacts.storage.googleapis.com%2F91bf12ee7df651f4470ccf14e26d650fc4d9e168%2F8556ecda23309408b9cd5406547f25c9.jpg

As the revolution went on, Robespierre became the leader of it all. He wrote all the lists of the suspected people who were going to be killed for treason. He also made a day to commemorate himself as he wore a toga and had the aura of a God. The people became to suspect he has gone too far, and he was going to soon take absolute control over them. One day as Robespierre was speaking out his new list of people to kill, he wouldn't share their names with the crowd. The crowd went hysterical, thinking that any one of them could've been on the list he held from them. In order to protect their own safety, they arrested him. He was determined to be guillotined, His two men who were by his side both killed themselves before they could be. Robespierre was unsuccessful at doing so and shot off his draw, but he still clung to life. He was taken and readied for the razor. His hair cut, unable to speak as well due to his injury. Finally, he was then guillotined, marking the end of the Reign of Terror.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/A69kfMNEaL0ylp_Onh6GVcoC442svceaaAYKFD2iLJb2deA0YWJhiYo8Ca1XXK06QRG12qZgBNHBCazrGIGHTwqE0SdH_uJqZQ=w2277-h1028

They were finally getting revenge and doing something about the way they have been treated for years and years. Troops were gathered around France, top keep watch of the people, but instead they raised insecure suspicions of the king. The people acted against the threat at hand and raided the Batille, a torture pirson where they knew to find guns and ammo inside.
