I am looking at how children choosing to read at home (reading for pleasure) is impacted by the relationship between schools and families. My mobile depicts family reading practices hanging from a house and school reading practices hanging from a school or government building. Joining the two is a book bag representing the to and fro of reading materials and practices between home and school. Dangling from that is a picture of my son (with permission). I used a mobile as it's often part of nursery decoration so key in the early development of a parental identity.

My research explores the employment experiences of people with fibromyalgia and of line managers who manage people with the condition. This artwork is a reflection of both me as an insider researcher with fibromyalgia, and of some of the conversation points that have arisen from my first narrative interviews. The box is for a rollerball mouse that was purchased for me by my workplace as a reasonable adjustment, to help me perform my role. Within the box, discussion points hang down and move to indicate the ebb and flow of the conversation. There are also empty strings dangling to indicate that more conversations are yet to be had. The framing of the words within the box acknowledges that I cannot separate myself from the research, as I explore through the window of my own experiences with fibromyalgia at work.

Jenny Allcock: Droplet dynamics on cylindrical fibres

A droplet of fluid, when placed on a cylindrical fibre, will take one of two morphologies: a "clamshell", where it sits on one side of the fibre; or a "barrel", where it surround the fibre completely. By treating the fibre chemically, it can be given a wetting pattern where some areas are more hydrophilic than others, and this pattern can generate spontaneous motion of the droplet.

My research so far demonstrates that a droplet on such a fibre will move, and spread, more slowly than an identical droplet on a flat, otherwise identical substrate.

But there's more! If microfluidics (my subject area) is applied maths, then watercolour painting is applied applied maths. The painting above demonstrates the following principles:

Pigment, i.e. inert particles in a suspension of water and binding medium, will flow from more wet areas to less wet areas.

When the paper is pre-wetted, the pigment particles flow slowly and drift within the wet area; so long as there isn't enough water to create puddles (in which case gravity becomes an issue), they won't run onto the dry areas of paper.

Brushes - i.e. collections of roughly cylindrical fibres - hold differing quantities of paint depending on their size and shape. For the background, I used a "mop" - c. 1.2cm diameter and 2.5cm long. The importance of fibre length on paint capacity has been known to artists a lot longer than it has mathematicians: fine, long brushes have been known as "riggers" for their use in painting the ropes in ships' rigging for centuries.

The surface I've used - 100% cotton, cold-pressed paper - affects the paint's behaviour. Cotton is more absorbent than cellulose, and the cold-press surface is rough to the touch. This allows the pigment particles to settle in the dips and grooves, and gives the lovely textured effect seen in the background.

The other 2 photos demonstrate the effects of point 5, substrate chemistry and topology. The first is on similar (100% cotton, cold-pressed) paper to my main image; the second is on hot pressed (smooth), cellulose paper. In each case, the dots on the left were done on a pre-wetted surface, and those on the right on dry. The top, larger, dots were painted to be the size maintained by the dry ones; the lower dots were from touching the tip of the brush to the paper once.

Continuing my series on my shaky understanding of Nietzsche's philosophy - interpretated in cake form. This one spells out YES, because Nietzsche appears to have felt we should say yes to all of life, not just the good bits, but accept it with discontent, suffering and tedium thrown in. From his notebooks:

Suppose that we said yes to a single moment, then we have not only said yes to ourselves, but to the whole of existence. For nothing stands alone, either in ourselves or in things; and if our soul did but once vibrate and resound with a chord of happiness, then all of eternity was necessary to bring forth this one occurrence—and in this single moment when we said yes, all of eternity was embraced, redeemed, justified and affirmed.

(Nietzsche, The Will to Power: Selections from the Notebooks of the 1880s)

Lichen is the result of a symbiotic relationship between an algae and a fungus. Its antimicrobial properties are the focus of Judith Taylor's research.
