My biggest takeaway from the resources was realizing that self care is more than a personal choice,it's my ethical responsibility and necessary for myself to be able to provide effective care in a balanced state of mind. Neglecting my own well-being could unintentionally harm those who I plan to assist ,which makes self care essential a necessity in my routine as a future professional counselor.

Importance of Self Care

Self care is important in any helping profession because we are constantly absorbing the emotional trauma of others. Without self care practices we can easily become vulnerable to burnout or vicarious trauma which can diminish empathy and reduce the quality of our care. Regardless of our specialty and gender it’s impossible to only provide care for others without taking care of yourself first.

Personal Self-Care Strategies

I have a few strategies I plan on using ,but one I would like to use is a clear set of boundaries between work, personal time and self care. Sometimes I can hyper focus on my work because I'm overly excited to help and have so much compassion in helping others I lose sight of myself and the world around me. This is when I should stop, slow down and practice mindfulness and apply those boundaries. Practicing mindfulness, self awareness with not only yourself, but with your loved ones as well can make a huge difference in your emotional well being and outlook on life. This can be through journaling which is my favorite, yoga and grounding myself. My boundaries by saying no,taking mental health days from work and creating space for myself. Creating these habits and noticing when I need to use them will help me maintain emotional balance. I believe this will help me now and as a counselor.
