It is even bigger than Germany (360 square kilometers) and has half of its population. The capital is neither Los Angeles or San Francisco, it is Sacramento.

California is located at the west coast and known as the "Golden State" because of the gold rush in the 19th century. Due to the geographic location and the moderate climate, it is a very attractive place to live and to work.

It is also a state of superlatives. The highest and deepest point in the US (without Alaska) are in California. The second largest city in the US, Los Angeles, the Bay area with San Francisco and the Silicon Valley are centers of the US economy. In addition, California is also important for fruit farming and wining. Finally, the National Parks are known in the entire US and beyond.

L.A. is California's largest city and located in the south. L.A. is well-known for Hollywood. In the early 19`s the American film industry started making movies there, in order to have great weather conditions on the set. After a few years more and more films were made there and Hollywood became the famous movie capital of the world. 
Not far away is Beverly Hills. Many celebrities and Hollywood-stars live in this exclusive district.

Another well-known city is San Francisco. It offers an interesting history and many stunning sights. 
The Golden Gate Bridge is a symbol of the United States and the biggest tourist attraction of San Francisco. Built in 1933 it connects San Francisco with Marin County. It is a geographic location at the south of the Bay area and close to San Francisco. Its size is 121,4 square kilometers. But it's not popular of its location. Whenever we think about the Silicon Valley, we have computers, software and devices like smartphones, tablets and wearables in mind. The incredible economic development started in the 60's when graduates of Stanford University founded the first computer companies. Today, the headquarters and research and development centers of the biggest high-tech companies are located in this valley.

The modern sides of California:
California is very modern and multicultural. The growth of California was driven by immigrants, mainly from Mexico, but also from many other countries. San Francisco has the most popular China town in the US and Sandford University is looking for the best students from the entire world.

The Yosemite National Park
The most popular one is the Yosemite National Park. The famous point of interest is the rock "El Capitan", which is a dream of every mountain climber. In addition the three stunning Yosemity falls are known for their height in the entire world.

The Death Valley
Another famous National Park is the Death Valley. It`s one of the most interesting deserts worldwide. The Death Valley is famous for its hight temperatures up to 54,4 degrees in the summer. In addition, it's the deepest valley below sea level and the hottest and dryest place on earth as well.

Sequoia National Park 
In the Sequoia National Park you can explore huge Sequoia trees. Indeed these stunning trees are about 80 meters high and more than 10 meters wide. Their age is on average 800 years, some trees have reached an age of 2000 years.

All parks have a unique nature and geological properties. They are visited by millions of tourists every year.

The warm and dry climate makes the forests very sensitive for fire. Once started wildfires seem to be unstoppable and brave firefighters risk their lives to keep them under control. Sometimes careless people start the fires with cigarettes or campfires. Unfortunately, the climate change accelerates wildfires in California with all their negative consequenses.


Earthquakes
Other awful natural disasters are the earthquakes in California. The North American plate and the Pacitic plate are always in movement and collide below the San Andreas Rift. This rift is about 1.300 kilometers long and is located between L.A. and San Francisco. Almost every day small earthquakes can be measured. Luckily since 1906 no catastrophic quake happened. To prevent dramatic consequences skyscrapers are resistent by special fundament constructions. The next big earthquake can not be predicted, but it will happen sooner or later.
