Pocket curates topical news articles tailored to one's unique interests. I get recommended articles about artificial intelligence, video games, and how to stop procrastinating (I'll read those later). Pocket also has articles that have been curated by its editors, and articles that have been popular in the last 24 hours. This means that users can have read the same articles as others, while also having their own unique interests.

Instead of news articles, Pinterest recommends photos (called pins) to its users. These images can range from cute pictures of cats to photos of living rooms to inspire interior designers, to even cooking recipes. All of Pinterest's recommendations are provided through a system called "Pinnersage". This recommends pins to the users through accessing a system that stores an analysis of the user's last three months of usage, as well as another system dedicated to a user's browsing over the last day. By combining these, Pinnersage can give much more tailored recommendations to Pinterest users than Pocket (Pal et al, 2020). Once again the types of images shown are curated towards the user. I often get recommended art from comic books as well as sketches to use as reference for art, as I am currently learning to draw.

While there are a number of differences between the two apps, they also have many similarities. Pocket and Pinterest both allow their users to save their recommended posts to different, custom folders. In the case of Pocket, articles can be sorted based on their topic. For example, all of the articles that related to ICT that I read were saved into a folder labelled "tech".

On Pinterest, these folders are much more similar to that of a mood board. One folder could be full of sketches, while another is dedicated solely to Spider-Man and another is all about interior design tips to make my bedroom look more exciting. A large folder can sometimes resemble Google Images, as it can feel like it's never-ending.

Another commonality between the two apps is how they don't own the content that they push towards their users. When a user clicks on an article or image on these apps, they are taken to another website, such as the New York Times, the Verge, Instagram, or TikTok. As such Pinterest and Pocket actually just gather and archive content to be accessed by their users.

When deciding what should be done with users' information, I feel that it is important for full transparency in what data is being collected, and for what purpose is it being used. People now have a choice if they want to have their data collected and stored.

Social media ads and personal information are closely linked to one another. That is why I included the clause on advertisement personalisation if you choose to share your information with Instagram. I also felt it would be less predatory if users always knew when they were being advertised to.

People's identity online can often be informed around their username unless it is promoting hate speech, they should be allowed to hold on to their identity.

Content moderation is important on social media to prevent inappropriate or illegal posts from being prevalent on Instagram. I felt that a three-strike system was the fairest way to do this as it would allow people to make genuine mistakes but would also would prevent people wishing to spread hatred online. I also thought informing people why their content was removed was important for transparency.
