When I worked in landscaping, the yards wouldn't wait for our permission to grow. So to manage our numerous properties, I created a schedule to manage time and keep organized on a weekly basis. Regardless of the weather, these properties needed to be done. This taught me to look ahead and forecast for potential obstacles (you can't reasonably cut grass during a downpour), manage my time well, and prioritize my work by order of importance.

As a commission artist for tabletop games many times my commissions have strict deadlines as players need the models for tournaments. In one particular job I had 8 days to fully finish and ship 100 models for a player in the UK to play in a large for-money tournament. With detailed planning and strict goal deadlines I was able to complete and ship the commission in 7 days and get it to the customer early for the tournament. Through appropriate time management, proper goal settings and dedicated efficiency I was able to complete the job ahead of schedule with around 100 hours of total work time

I have a high level of impulse control, so that allows me not to act rashly when I encounter pressure or a problem. For example, when I worked as a logistician for a company, the electricity went out in the area where the company building is located. When I realized that there would be no electricity or Internet for a long time, I quickly went home to work remotely in order not to lose contact with the clients.

We were in a group of 3 and had to designate tasks quickly. It was something we had to get done in a short time yet be professional and it put us under pressure.

Working in a kitchen you are always under pressure. It’s one of those jobs that no matter how much you plan, unpredictable circumstances always arise and you have to spring into action.

One example I can give you is when my owner had me complete a menu launch in two weeks. Normally this task takes about 2 months so I can do research, test recipes, sell them as features to get proper feedback, cost the menu and train both BOH and FOH staff members. I had to complete this all in 2 weeks on top of school. I really pushed myself to make this happen and still make my education a priority. In the end the menu launch went smoothly and didn’t effect my classes or teams.

A time that I worked under pressure was when, during my time as a back-of-house supervisor at a luxury resort, we lost power. The resort has multiple restaurants and hosts up to 1000 people in other events on any given day. I was the only leader from my department present at the time and had to take charge of organizing an effort to collect and move all of the food from multiple kitchens to fridges before they would be closed to preserve the temperature inside. I collaborated with other leaders in the hotel and we managed to save most of the food, much of it designated for multiple large events the next day. We did this by efficient communication, integrating our teams together to use manpower efficiently, and understanding the time constraints we were under.

While working as a receptionist at a salon, I was under quite a bit of pressure to ensure that all of the estheticians were not falling behind with their appointments. I ensured that I was on top of checking to see how much time our estheticians had left, and would scratch their door to give them a 10 minute warning if they had an appointment immediately after. If I was not answering phones and serving clients, I would be in the back ensuring that everything was clean and ready for the estheticians so they did not have to rush to clean their supplies and set up for their next client.

As a customer service representative at RONA I would consistently find myself in front of 20 people lines while filing returns, shipping orders, and pick up orders. The pressure of agitated customers focused my attention on the task at hand, and compressed me into a more efficient and mindful customer service representative. Following a flow chart, a system, I thanked customers for their patience, empathized with their situation, dignified their grievances and focused on addressing their needs in an efficient manner. I handled this pressure by maintaining an objective and rational mindset, following the sequence effectively, while periodically dialing for assistance in between customers. By doing my best, customers ended up proud of themselves for being patient, and understanding of me for being busy. This actually turned a negative customer experience into a strangely positive one. Many were more grateful than they would have been otherwise, and we retained many customers because of this

Working under pressure is an area I excel in as I am able to remain focused on end goals and strive to achieve them by a given time. There have been many times in the past where I have been rushing to finish on a closing deadline, weather during a test or in a workplace. Being in this situation raises stress levels, but maintaining a level mindset and not getting overwhelmed and things I consider every time I am faced with pressure.
