After the the 13th district rebelled against the capital, the president destroyed the 13th district and to exercise political control they now hold a tournament every year called the Hunger Games, one female and male from every district is chosen to fight in the hunger games. They are put into a dome where they fight each other until there is one person left. Katniss Everdeen the main charter lives in district 12, people die everyday because food is scarce. Her sister is drawn from the bowl to fight in the Hunger Games, Katniss volunteers in her place to fight.
