Popular bass players like: Les Claypool, Flea, Marcus Mille, Victor wooten, Futoshi Uehara uses this technique in majority of the songs they play.

Hardware and software:

Cliff burton tribute Morley WAH + FUZZ pedal

This pedal was used by late, Cliff Burton, this pedal is one of the best pedals I ever used, it can act as a fuzz, wah or even volume pedal, the pedal also can fix some cables and doesn't consume a lot of battery.

Big muff pedal

Big muff is a distortion pedal, it can be very loud and very distorted, along side being a distortion pedal, it can boost your mids and high mids if needed.

TS808 Overdrive pedal

TS808 Overdrive pedal is probably the most famous Overdrive pedal, being used by countless muscians.

Compressor pedal

Compressor pedal is essential for my tone as without it, my bass would be making a lot of unwarranted sounds, compressor pedal makes loud and quiet noises into the same decibel, this makes you sound more cleaner and prevents any unwarranted sound.

Tuner

This simply allows you to tune your instrument however you like.

Inspiration:

Les Claypool - Primus

Les claypool was a big inspiration for this project as he allowed me to learn from slapping and add a bit of funk to hard times. I use Cliff Burton tribute fuzz/wah pedal and combine that wah pedal with other pedals cliff uses like a overdrive pedal and a big muff pedal, this makes my bass sound very heavy and strong when needed. From technical skill. he inspired me to pick up some form of classical music and treat bass much more of an instrument.

Futoshi Uehara - Maximum the hormone

Futoishi also had inspired me to do more slapping on the bass and also inspiring me for time and rhythm, he also inspired me to learn more technical skill in terms of song writing.

Familiarities: The song "Mama said" follows the same chord progression as pixies: "Where is my mind" by the pixies, this made the song very easy to pick up, especially anyone who doesn't know that much about theory but have played the song before. 'I'd love to change the world' follows the chromatic scale which I got familiarised with.

Warm up: Before the band start doing a setlist, we all play "Mama said" as it is the easiest song to do in the setlist as it's only 4 chords and a very simple structure.

Meeting with others: Our schedule is just a Wednesday but then everyone agreed to do Wednesday and then Friday, so we have more practice in considering everyone is usually in for that day. Before the performance, we all got in by 10am on Wednesday to have one final practice before the big show.

Performing: Performance in rehearsal for me is to know the song as much as possible so that I can add new things to the baseline of the song to hopefully be able to change it enough where it's not just a straight up 1 to 1 with the original song. Hard times given me the most freedom as it didn't have bass in the original song but because it followed 'where is my mind' chord progression, it wasn't hard to make up a basic baseline then change that baseline into something else. For 'Mama said' I wanted to add a bit more of southern rock in the song so I made a baseline that was sort of like sweet home Alabama.

Songwriting: When songwriting on cover songs, I don't want to try copy exactly the studio recording, I want to make the baseline sound new and original or at least played in my own style, in 'hard times' I played slap bass during the chorus, ended the chorus with a pop/pull off to build up suspense and during the interlude, I done a bass build up so that the singer voice sounds more powerful but also hypes up the crowd. During 'The night we met' the song had little bass to it, so I pulled inspiration from folk, the inspiration can be chalked up to, taking inspiration from The Pogues and from Mischief Brew, this made feel more alive than empty. 'Mama said' I wanted to sound like more southern rock because of the music video and the singer voice in the recording, I think it was best option to go than just follow the chord progression because it makes the song more interesting and alive.

'Easy way to cry' is an original piece, at the start, people were rushing and wanted me to just essentially follow the chord progression on low notes but I fought against it because it made the intro of the song to dull and uninteresting as it takes away acoustic nature of the intro, so I played the chord progression on the G string and add a bit of classical style on the bassline so that not only the intro sounds light and acoustical but also made the bass line not overwhelming. During the second phase of the song, I want build up to sound light then heavy, to do this, I played along with the lead guitarist making a harmonic build up that sort of sounded like the song 'under the bridge' by Red Hot Chilli Peppers, when it reached the heavier part of the second phase, I went for chords to make it the heavier part sound closed in, I have practically used counter-point for this part of the song (Counter points, means turning the song sounding from closed in to opening the song, vice versa.) When the first chorus kicked in, I followed the chord progression but done some bass fills, to amplify the build up the chorus, I put an overdrive on the bass to keep it sound clean but add some excitement. The final phase of the song, I chose to only on the kick so when the build up to the second chorus comes, I can start playing in 8th's so that there is a build up. When the guitar solo kicks in, I played with the drum rhythm but added harmonics at the end to come back around with some harmonics I did during the second phase of the song. To clear up some of the noise, when the lead guitarist is doing fast picking, I just played the root notes so that everyone can hear him more clear, after that, I change up the baseline to be more interesting and catchier to conclude the song, the ending bass line was more inspired by the 'Walk' bass line during the solo of the song, that song was made by Pantera. For the song, 'I'd love to change the world' I played the intro with my own alternative of it whilst the rhythm guitarist played the original, the bass intro part of the song was inspired by the 'cemetery gates' intro that was also made by 'Pantera'.

How have your skills and knowledge developed over the course of the project?

My skill on the bass, had improved, I learnt slapping to a far better level. I have learnt some music theory and scales. I have more knowledge and how loud my bass should be and the tone of it. I also learnt more of my pedals and how to make them sound better.

How has the performance of others impacted the development and delivery of the project?

Everyone performance was calm and energetic, especially at the last song, everyone started to hype of the bridge and started to get some crowd interaction which sold the crowd.

Did you have to change the way you approached any aspect of your project? If so, why?

Because of the genre of the band, I had to change my bass tone many times so that it suits, first the bass had a mid tone on it as I usually use for most songs and projects as it is very universal, then I swapped to a very low tone all though I did not liked it because it muffles the bass and makes it sound barely existent, then low quiet tone which helped some of the issues of the previous tone but I still hated it, so by the end, I went full out and just went for high treble, half mids, mid bass so that bass was heard and allowed to play slap on the last song. I also use to have other pedals, like a chorus and a octave pedal but however the pedal board broke so I had to come up with a solution to fix that problem, I looked at all the pedals that I have and which one's can use batteries, thankfully the most important pedals can use batteries, then I bought rechargeable 9v batteries so that I can keep reusing them, unfortunately, they can lose fuel really quick, but I came up ways to save it such as taking any cables out of the pedal to ensure that now power is activated. Without the chorus and octave pedal, I did had to scrap the low bass tone's.
