From the book Divergent, the main character Tris Prior wants to make change in the society that is dependent on long-established conformity. She's accustomed to doing tasks on her own to make better for others, while receiving help and support, her actions are based solely on the faith that she can make change. The quote from the text Self-Reliance, "Society everywhere is in conspiracy against the manhood of every one of its members. Society is a joint-stock company in which the members agree for the better securing of his bread to each shareholder," Demonstrates the relation to corrupt governments as in the book Divergent and how Tris's self-reliance is what fuels her drive for change.

"The struggles of a 16 year old, I came here without even knowing the language. No one understands me, nobody. I needed a chance, the end of my wandering, I remember when the thunder came. I prayed to god that I will never ever fall again. Drowning under pressure what comes after my insanity. Friends that stabbed my back brought me back into reality. I erased my bad experiences." She describes her life and the things she had to do to better herself while being completely on her own, this relates to the text on how self-reliance is an importance in people's lives.

In an ever-changing society John Scopes was a teacher who taught evolution, being a controversial topic for the time he provided a beginning for the 10th amendment and the freedom to teach an observation on possibilities of our creation. From what I think it's that he was misunderstood for wanting to disprove the existence of god, rather he wanted to provide a questioning for another picture on what could be our great existence in this universe.

Emerson's appeals

Demonstrating the ruthless truths behind life, the author states, " There is a time in every man's education when he arrives at the convention that envy is ignorance; that imitation is suicide; that he must take himself for better, for worse, as his portion; and though the wide universe is full of good, no kernel of nourishing corn can come to him but through his toil bestowed on that plot of ground which is given to him tell," This appeals to the reader's understanding that life isn't the perfection perceived to be.

Evoking the defeat experienced by many, Emerson conveys, "A man is relieved and gay when he has put his heart into his work and done his best; but what has he said or done otherwise, shall give him no peace. It is a deliverance which does not deliver. In the attempt his genius deserts him; no muse befriends; no invention, no hope," He relates to the reader by explaining how putting a lot of effort into one thing and getting nothing out of it is a frustrating task many have encountered throughout their lives.

Listing examples of great philosophers who were misunderstood, "Ah, then, exclaim the aged ladies, you shall be sure to be misunderstood... Is it so bad to be misunderstood? Pythagoras was misunderstood, and Socrates, and Jesus, and Luther, and Copernicus, and Galileo, and Newton, and every pure and wise spirit that ever took flesh. To be great is to be misunderstood," He justifies himself as knowledgeable on those who are successful on being able to, as the title of the text identifies, self-reliable.
