The Bubonic plague (also known as "The Black Death") was a pandemic that spread throughout Europe and killed millions of people throughout 1347-1350. The bubonic plague was spread through fleas and rats and had no cure at the time. It was contagious through sneezing and coughing. Without the technology or knowledge that is present today, it is incredible the world was able to survive such a disease.

Infected rats would be bitten by fleas, and would then bite people to infect them. The black death was also contagious via sneezing or coughing, which contributed to how quickly it spread through Europe

The Black Death terrorized the people of Europe during the 1300s. 60% of Europe fell to The Black Death, meaning 3 out of 5 people had the plague. Contracting the plague always led to Death. Doctors had no way of stopping or curing the plague.

The plague began to fade from Europe at around 1350. Winter temperatures would kill infected fleas so people were not being infected anymore. The total world population prior to The Black Death was around 450 million. In 1350, when the pandemic had somehow died down, the total world population was at 350 million. It took, at most, 150 years for cities to recover from the plague's damage. People were very pessimistic after The Black Death which was evident through art. The economy was better for peasants after the plague as wages increased and there was more affordable land. Europe was overpopulated prior to The Black Death but lost more than half of its population afterwards. The Black Death, to this date, has not been eradicated (there are extremely rare cases in the U.S. and a few in Africa) but the chances of contracting it are extremely low. The Black Death's legacy has lived on for centuries after its occurance and serves as a reminder to the world as to how horrible life can become.
