They are horrible creatures that kill and hurt the boys inside the maze. I do find them scary but I don't really understand many things about them, like what they exactly are, if they are robotic or not, etc. 
Because I still don't understand these creatures in depth its a little harder to understand their purpose, or to imagine how they do the things they do.

Trying to escape and figuring out the maze is basically their most important goal, so they can leave the glade. 
Even if it's something important in their lives, it doesn't mean it's good.
The gladers are extremely scared of the maze because going inside is basically death. There are horrible creatures inside the maze and many other gladers have died there.

It's one of the most important things of the books and movies, and it's basically what represents the Maze Runner in general. 
The maze adds mystery and suspense to the books and even makes readers scared.

I just couldn't imagine appearing in a completely new place, and then having to sleep there forgeting my old life. 
Even if I do think that living in the glade would be a bit scary, I think it's  very interesting place. 
The writers could've chosen a completely different setting for the boys to appear and live in, but they chose a big piece of land surrounded by a giant maze.
