Although the Norse had explored and colonized areas of the North Atlantic, colonizing Greenland and creating a short term settlement near the northern tip of Newfoundland circa 1000 CE, the later and more well-known wave by the European powers is what formally constitutes as beginning of colonization, involving the continents of North America and South America.

1. European nations came to the Americas to increase their wealth and broaden their influence over world affairs. The Spanish were among the first Europeans to explore the New World and the first to settle in what is now the United States.
2. The Europeans also brought with them their culture, religion, and technology, which had a profound impact on the indigenous peoples of the Americas. The Europeans brought diseases like smallpox, which devastated Native American populations, and also introduced new crops and animals, such as horses, which transformed Native American culture and economies.
Overall, the European colonization of the Americas had a significant impact on the history and development of both Europe and the Americas, shaping the political, economic, and cultural landscape of both continents.

The changes were caused by a number of factors, including loss of land, disease, enforced laws which violated their culture and much more.

2. Colonization ruptured many ecosystems, bringing in new organisms while eliminating others. The Europeans brought many diseases with them that decimated Native American populations.
