The N-Word

This source to me is a great example on how their are many different views on how and when it is acceptable, or if it even is acceptable to use the N-Word. In this short clip the amount of power, suffering and pain this one individual word possesses and can cause is discussed. A big issue is in rap music. When it comes to rap, it is so common, people have began to over look it and even ignore it is a sense of music. I have listened to rap music so many times that I have come to a degree where when I hear the word being used it does not cross my mind twice. On the contrary, if my mom were to be listening to that type of music with me and she heard the usage of the word, she would say something about how bad this music is or how wrong it is. As time goes on and new music evolves the meaning of this word continues to change. With this change comes a question, is the evolution for the better or for the worse?

Raising Black Child in America

When raising a child, their skin color shouldn't be a factor on how parents have to go about teaching their children about wrong and right in our world today. Unfortunately though, it is. During this ted talk Smith tells us stories about how he was raised and how he goes about raising his own son. An example that really stuck out to me was all about the "talk". Now when i hear someone mention the talk the first thing that comes to mind is all about the birds and the bees. But to African Americans it's not information about our bodies, it's a talk on how not to move too fast, keep your hands where you can see them and to remove your hood once the sun goes down. I guess i just don't understand how we have evolved so much when it comes to racism and profiling, but yet we still have so far to go. When will this world be "a place where every single one of us can breathe"?

What kind of Asian are you?

Some people are so focused on racism only when is comes to African Americans. In reality though racism is all over. People are so racist towards Asians and any people just over look it. If you really think about it and compare racism between African Americans and Asians, their are just as many slang word, stereotypes, and slurs towards Asians. Alex Dang Expresses his thoughts on how people portray Asians. He argues that he still feels that shame of being Asian and the shame from 1963. It really just makes me wonder if all people of different color or ethnicity feel this much shame or hate towards them everyday.

Bow's Struggle

In this short chip Bow talks about the struggles she faced growing up biracial. She is talking about how she would do everything and anything so she could fit in. As Bow talks about this, i can't help but think that it is still happening around us today. For instance with teenage girls. When it come to trying to fit in, blending in with the cool crowd, or even just trying to gain your friends approval girls will go to extreme extents to achieve this so called "goal". African Americans are still confused on why they are asking themselves these questions on, do they fit in? But in reality everyone is still asking themselves this question. I see it everyday walking down the halls of a small town high school in the state Maine.

Scandal

In the past few years there has been a lot of controversy with brutal police attacks targeting black males. It seems as if the government goes back and fourth with wither it is the police profiling or not. In this episode of scandal Shonda Rhimes gives a great example on how in some cases police over look what really happened and automatically jump to conclusions. In today's day and age i feel when you turn on the TV to any certain news channel there is always a story that has something to do with racism or anything along the lines of that. It really makes me think that is it true that all these bad thing are happen to only African Americans, or is it that they are the only ones that get a second look because of their race.

This Amazing, Troubling book

Morrison show her reaction to this book in a marvelous way. She goes from when she first read this book as a young child, to when she read it with supervision in middle school. As you read throw this essay you get a good feel on all of her thoughts. For example the uneasiness that comes to your stomach as you read the book. Its remarkable to me that we are in the year 2017 and this feeling comes to me as i read this book that was written in the 1800s, which is totally expected. On the contrary though i still continue to get that uneasy feeling when i hear about the same kind of racism, over 100 years later, that i am currently writing about in this project.

Where is the Love

"In the USA, the big CIA
The Bloods and The Crips and the KKK

But if you only have love for your own race
Then you only leave space to discriminate
And to discriminate only generates hate" There is just something that is so remarkable about the lyrics in this song. Mindless listeners can just sit down and listen to this song and automatically know the meaning without doing any prior research. The parts of life that this song acknowledges from the discrimination of race, violent actions,to even selfless and selfishness. This song to me hits the bulls-eye on what this project is about and the point i personally am trying to get across.

As i sit here and think about all the times i have argued with my sister, at some point my dad would come over and ask what happened. From there we would go back and fourth on what happened and what we say happened. The meaning of this song is to get both sides of this on going argument, racism. As i was listening to the song i truly started to understand and see both sides. In my opinion i agreed about a lot of things the white male was saying, on the contrary everything the black man said contradicted everything in a great way. We have come so far with racism but we truly haven't come far enough. "We were all humans until race disconnected us, religion separated us, politics divided us, and wealth classified us."

In today's age racism is automatically expected at any place in time. In this article a woman of color from Maine is sending her son off to school for the first time. It seems to be when a white mother goes to send off her child she is telling him to make sure to say please and thank you, Be kind to other kids and all that normal stuff. When a woman of color is sends off their child they are explaining to them that they may experience discrimination is just completely wrong. Its just sad to think that children before they even get to school should expect to see racism. It shows where are society is today. This woman talks about how so many kids and family's are excited to shop for school clothes and pack their kids lunch when she is worried about whither her child is going to be discriminated against because of their skin color.

In today's world we teach our children that racism is wrong and people who are racist need to be taught a lesson. But in some cases people use this as an excuse. It seems to be if a person with color is accused of anything or any crime they immediately pull the racism card. Don't get me wrong though this is not the case with everyone. I can really go wither way. For example in this reading a white boy tells another boy who; claims that someone said to him that he couldn't understand because he was not black. I fell like we sometimes look at the fact of being a victim of all this injustice cant always be the answer.
