In this photo I took in the North End of Boston, I used shapes to make it interesting and eye catching. Cities are made up of all sorts of awesome shapes on buildings, windows and in the streets and I thought capturing those cool shapes would make an interesting picture. The buildings I photographed contain many different variations of squares, rectangles and other patterns that make it eye catching and unique.

In this photo I took at the Boston Harbor, I created a balanced composition using the woman standing on the ramp. All parts of this photo, the boat, the woman, the rocky ground and the buildings below, all draw attention to themselves. That being said, because no one part of this photo has more interest or attention, this is good example of a balanced composition.

In a picture I took of my boyfriend that appeared in the art show, I effectively used dodging and burning to bring attention to his whole face. At the time I took the photo, the sun was low in the sky and was originally shining on just one side of his face, making one side lighter than the other. To fix this issue and draw the viewer's attention to his face and stern expression as a whole, I used dodging and burning. I covered the lighter side of his face with cardboard for an extra 3 seconds or so and it helped balance the shadows and color of his face to be equal.

In this picture of a city alleyway, I used leading lines to direct the viewer’s attention to the natural shadows created by the late afternoon sunlight. This photo has a line created by the sun in the middle of the photo that separates dark from light and creates captivating and almost eerie shadows. I think that because the line is so harsh and in the dead center of the picture, it was a successful tactic to direct the viewer’s attention.

When printing the decisive moment picture of my mom, the original copy was dark and her face and body were very undefined and almost blurry. I knew that I wanted to print this photo for the art show but it definitely needed some touch ups, so I started experimenting with filters! I had practiced using filters a week or so before, and I really enjoyed using them to enhance my prints. For this print, I first used a 2.5 filter because I didn’t know what would be too much or too little contrast for the picture. The 2.5 seemed to not be enough so I ended up using a 3 filter and after some dodging and burning as well, I created a beautifully contrasted picture!

This picture of my boyfriend mid-laugh shows a great deal of emotion and lets the viewers almost feel it and get a sense for who he is. This picture portrays so much emotion to viewers because I think most people can tell that it was a genuine laugh, not a staged one, by his body language. The extreme amount of joy on his face interests viewers and makes them think “why is he so happy?” or “what is he laughing at?”, and viewers also get the sense of how he is a generally cheerful and happy person without needing words to describe it.
