UDL and Meeting the Needs of Adult Learners with Disabilities

The WV Adult Ed Instructor Handbook, "Meeting the Needs of Adult Learners," offered many helpful ideas for addressing the needs of adult students with disabilities, many of which overlap with UDL recommendations. For example, the handbook recommends that teachers "Use language experience approaches and reading materials from the home and work environment to stimulate interest" and "Be creative and attempt to vary your teaching style." These are all things that are addressed in UDL recommendations as well. I plan to include a section in my lesson plans that indicates how the lesson incorporates UDL strategies, particularly those that allow for multiple means of representation and multiple means of expression.

Accommodation

When it comes to accommodations and reflecting on this week I believe that I qualify for one of these. It has been a week that I wish I don't ever have to deal with any time soon.

Universal design for learning (UDL) is a set of principles for designing curriculum that provides all individuals with equal opportunities to learn. UDL is de-
signed to serve all learners, regardless of ability, disability, age, gender, or cultural and linguistic back-ground. “TEAL Universal Design for Learning”

When it comes to the UDL it is not something that I will use in the future. This is more for groups and not for a single student. The unit plan that I did can be for one or two people that can work independently or for the whole group where I can find homework that doesn’t repeat. I can see how this can be a good way of doing things.
