In my opinion, the misfit has had a troubling past and Serious health issues (grotesque character). The grandmother kept trying to save him from the beggining till her death and scared him, how she would not care about jer own live but care about others,at leasy to his perspective. We know the grandmother started saying all that to save her family but by the end when she had no family left, she sounded genuine. She herself was loosing hope at some point " Jesus, Jesusa, meaning , Jesus will help you, but the way she was saying it, it sounded as if she might be cursing." The grandmother does not stay consistent with her pleading, at first she appears very calm like she is in no trouble, she believes the misfit will change his ways. After the forst gunshots she seems a little desperate. After everyone but her has been killed, she enters this calmlessness clear, happy mindset.
