Decline In Morals And Values In Rome

Rome faced many problems such as a decline in morals and values which I believe played a major role in the downfall of ancient Rome. First of all, the decline in morals means facing many social injustices such as slavery. This happened everywhere in Rome, in fact, 10% of the population of Rome was enslaved (8 to 10 million people). The decline in values is when the government uses a huge amount of money on certain things when very little money is left for others. For example, when emperors, "like Caligula and Nero became infamous for wasting money on lavish parties where guests ate and drank until they became sick," as stated in the site, "Fall Of The Roman Empire." Also at one point 1/3 of the money received by the Roman Government went to spend on gladiator fights. Plus much of the money went to the army. Clearly, the downfall of Rome was at least partially due to the fact of decline in morals and values.

Rome's Decline in Moral Values Today

Rome's moral decline played a decently large part in their downfall in 476 CE. This decline included crime, wanting to watch gladiators die, and even living very lavish lifestyles. In our world today, the streets are sometimes filled with crime just like Rome where people can't feel safe driving down their own neighborhood. Now people are also living more unhealthy and lavish lifestyles almost following the Romans "eat and drink until you're ill". This includes us now eating junk food only because its cheaper and not caring about our bodies consuming all of the food which doesn't help your body function, eventually leading to becoming ill from the food. Our avarice has led us to a state of extreme greed with low ethics and moral values. Thus leading to an increased rate of crime to get more money. Now, speaking of crime it doesn't just involve robberies and such it involves shootings in innocent places like schools and more. Now, Rome may not have had the mass shootings and bank robberies, but they sure did have types of theft, forgery, and even murder. While they didn't have guns they used a dagger, sword, and a javelin. This was all according to https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/readersblog/happiness-not-a-cliche/decline-in-moral-values-in-modern-times-42850/ and https://knowtheromans

I believe Social Development Goal #16, Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, is very much like the decline in morals and values in Rome. According to the site sdgs.un.org, goal 16 is about to, "Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels. " Peace means to reach a state where there is no violence and there is tranquility. Justice means when people get just behavior and treatment. Strong institutions are where every employee has the rights and earnings they deserve. Clearly, Rome did not achieve this goal and was suffering to decline in morals and values.
