Reporting Crimes against women

When : Now.

Afghan women are becoming increasingly aware of their rights as violent attacks against women rise with the Taliban takeover. Yet in comparison to the past, women are pushing back more. They are reporting their abusers and the violent acts committed against them. However, many of these cases will never make it to the formal justice system due to EVAW law. Women need to continue remembering their rights as people and reporting the crimes. They need to continue their fight back against the violence committed against them.

Change Dysfunctional Laws in Afghanistan

When : Within the next 10 years.

The Afghan judicial system is extremely dysfunctional with new government takeovers and all that. And there is still protest to protective female legislation. The law needs to shift to protect women and all victims of abuse in order to truly protect its citizens. The Afghan system also must remove its sexism in order to truly help women. Women and allies need to keep attempting to pass legislations to help women in order for the system to change. It will take time as it did in Canada and the US but it has proven to work in other countries.

Use Religion

When : Over the next 20 years

The Taliban follows Sunni Islam as roughly 90% of the world's Muslims do. This is important to note as Sunni scripture states that rape of a Muslim woman is a crime against Islam. The Quran also says that women will not be forced into prostitution; women and children will not be harmed during wartimes. That female genital mutilation has no place in Islam. Islam also has a mandate that women are equal to men. Recognizing the Quran is essential to understanding the Taliban government as its all based on their religion. True religion needs to be advocated for. Using the mosque should have the same effect as women using the church as a safe place. The mosque has influence as a religious group of people. By using the world of Islam, women can rally supporters by simply telling them what Islam mandates and what everyone should support since they follow Islam.

When : Next 15 years.

As horrible as it sounds, women in Afghanistan will need to have some ground of their own before the US or NATO even considers getting involved in conflict again. By rallying global support, they shine a negative light on their country's leaders, which can lead to bad trade agreements and general embarrassment. With social media, the world will ignite like a storm to help the fight and add to the shaming of leaders who won't fight for women. It's worked many times since the creation of social media, and it's bound to work again.

When : Next 5 years.

The Taliban has already banned arranged marriages, but that isn't enough. They want to seem as if they are pro-women, but they haven't changed enough. Women and their supports need to continue fighting for their education, social rights, and rights to politics and not give up. Any falter in their movements allows for a fast shut down by the patriarchy. It is critical women do not stop pushing.

Fight Back

When : The next 25 years.

After the legislation is pushed through, global and local support is gained, and women stop politically fighting back, it's time for the social fight. We started with our legislation in Canada, then came into our social protests. We burned bras, and we screamed in the faces of our oppressors, but legal protection was necessary. If we hadn't gained that little bit of security, we couldn't fight back in the ways we did in the 60s and 70s. After all the legality is done, it will be the Afghani women's turn to burn their bras and socially fight back to reform. The women need to find a way to revert back to what they were in the 70s, and they need to see that fire again to live how they choose.

Reflection

Naturally, I want a change for these women within 25 years, but that is unrealistic. In fact, if I wanted to be realistic, likely, this reform won't happen in my lifetime. It's the same basis that women in North America won't be finished fighting for themselves in my lifetime. The fight for women, sadly even in Canada, is not even close to being finished. We still have to fight every day just to avoid being raped or sexually assaulted, let alone the patriarchal systems we have in place. I like to believe with my heart that this so-called plan I've created would work, but honestly, as a realist, I know it wouldn't. Our world isn't perfect.
There is no magic plan to fix what it's like to live as a woman. Every day it is one step at a time. There is no timeframe on when we will be treated as equals. Still, I guarantee you that even when we Canadian women make it to equality, our fight will just take place in another country. I am a feminist, and I am proud of that fact; I do not hate all men, I do not hate all government bodies, but to ask me even as much of a feminist I am to come up with a way to fix this is impossible. The only solution is to fight. There are no steps to battle. You just simply do. The only way to ensure that we make it even close to our goal is to never stop. The only plan that works is to never give up. I wish with all my heart that this plan would work. But we both know it wouldn't.
