In reference to competency standard 12.2 of the 'Culturally Responsive Clinical Practice: Working with People from Migrant and Refugee Backgrounds. I endeavour to look at my biases when dealing with patients from all different backgrounds. Looking back to when I was younger, I feel that I would stereotype people that were different to myself. As I have grown older, I have met and worked with people of different backgrounds whilst also self-reflecting on my own prejudices and biases. I feel that I am now in a much better to understand that a lot of systems are built around people of European backgrounds and to try to be sensitive and patient of the struggles that people of multicultural backgrounds face. I think by listening and being empathetic this will help me to operate culturally appropriate.

A social determinant faced by refugees in Australia is education, language barriers can make it more difficult to learn. Education styles can differ between countries making it more difficult and stressful aswell.
Unemployment and job insecurity is another barrier facing refugees. Language barriers can make it difficult to find employment aswell as previous skills and qualifications not transferring across to Australia meaning that refugees may have to take on new training or take on lower skilled work.
Food insecurity is another factor for refugees to deal with. With potential unemployment or a period of finding a job and living on the small amounts of social benefits may mean that food gets foregone in favour of paying for housing and other amenities.

Social Determinants of Health, www.who.int/health-topics/social-determinants-of-health

Sport is deeply ingrained into the nation's identity. Australia prides itself on competing at I high level in sports against nations with a much larger population. There are sporting fields all over the country, from the middle of cities to the most remote towns you could find some goalposts or a cricket pitch. Being a great way to keep fit and healthy whilst also being part of a community sport was encouraged to me from a young age. Growing up my weekends in Winter were spent playing AFL and during Summer I would be playing cricket.

Australia being an island nation means that the beach and ocean is a massive part of a lot of Australians culture. This includes for recreational activities such as surfing, swimming, snorkeling or trying to escape the heat on a hot day. Long summer days can be spent at the beach with a mix playing games in the sand and spending time in the ocean. Australian children are raised with a mix of love and fear of the ocean, being taught how to swim from a young age and to be wary of the dangerous creatures that live in the ocean.

ANZAC biscuits are a sweet biscuit that were sent by people back home in Australia to soldiers fighting overseas in World War 1. These biscuits were meant to not spoil for a long period so they could be sent across on Navy ships for the soldiers to enjoy. Since then they have become a popular Australian biscuit over the years. ANZAC biscuits are made using flour, rolled oats, caster sugar, butter, golden syrup, water and bicarbonate soda.

Australian rural towns and communities are often built around the farming land that surrounds them. Sheep, cattle, dairy and cropping farms are throughout the country. These farmers are reliant on the harsh Australian weather and survive through droughts, bushfires and floods. They pride themselves on their hard work and resilience. Quite often these farms have been in families for generations and the knowledge gets past down from the parents to children who take over the farm. Rural communities take pride in supporting each other and bond over their ability to survive in remote and challenging conditions.
