“You ask me whether I approve of violence? That just doesn’t make any sense at all. Whether I approve of guns? I grew up in Birmingham, Alabama. Some very, very good friends of mine were killed by bombs – bombs that were planted by racists. I remember, from the time I was very small, the sound of bombs exploding across the street and the house shaking … That’s why, when someone asks me about violence, I find it incredible because it means the person asking that question has absolutely no idea what black people have gone through and experienced in this country from the time the first black person was kidnapped from the shores of Africa (Bakare, 2020).”

“This is a measure of how difficult it is to envision a social order that does not rely on the threat of sequestering people in dreadful places designed to separate them from their communities and their families,” said Davis. “The prison is considered so natural and so normal that it is extremely hard to imagine life without them.”

As humans we learn everything we know from others and the world around us. Every single crime we send people behind bars for has an underlying issue. Every possession case has some void those people are trying to fill and every domestic viloelnce and sexual violence case has some lack of education or understanding. By educating and helping people understand why they do certain actions and what a better way to manage or deal with that void is we can not only stop paying stupid amounts of money for people to sit behind bars but change the world. Rehibilation not incarceratrion.
