Part of this is having rapid recall of known facts, such as multiplication tables, but more than that, it is a sense of familiarity and of ‘living within’ mathematical structures. This builds on fluency in primary.

Remember manipulatives and the CPA approach is to ensure children 'see the structure' rather than use them to get an 'answer.'
