Chapter 4 WRD 103.210 by Hannah Harris

In pairs, discuss each of the following questions and post your answer on the Padlet. Answers to these questions may be inspired by the reading, but I’m not looking for quotes from the book. Rather, answer the questions truthfully and critically. Include your names on the Padlet. You can take turns typing or do whatever works. Be prepared to share your ideas with the class.

1. 4A: When you reread your draft, what questions do you ask yourself? What is your self-talk like when you reread your writing?

2. 4B: What is the purpose of peer review? What should peer review be? What should peer review not be? (For fun, find an example of a comment troll on the internet. Include a link to a ‘peer review’ gone wrong.)

3. 4E, 4G, 4I: How do you actually use feedback? Do you use peer vs. instructor feedback differently?

4. 4J: How do you decide to include visuals, media, or design?

4a. Does this draft make sense? What are the most important points in the paper? What do I like most in my paper? Self-talk is sometimes harsh.
4b. Peer review is good for gaining more insight about ideas you didn't even think of. Peer review should be constructive and honest. Peer review should not be just critical and useless, not just reading it.
4e,4g,4i. Feedback is important to build a good paper. It is necessary to use whatever feedback is provided, whether that be from a peer or an instructor. Instructor feedback is good because it is directly what the instructor wants to see in your writing. Peer feedback is good because it is given by someone that may think similarly to you and have similar ideas.
4j. Visuals and media can sometimes enhance the story or paper, sometimes it isn't the best thing to include in a paper though. Visuals make reading a paper easier and often readers like to see visuals.

1. Does this make sense? Is there a purpose and did I hit all the points I wanted to?
Read as the reader and not yourself (put yourself in someone else's shoes, someone that might have a different perspective)
2. To get other's opinions, to have an outside perspective and a new person looking over it.
Peer review should be helping someone better their writing, but it should not be someone else's opinions taking over the writing.

3.If the message gets across clearly and they're not trying to change the overall subject. We take instructor feedback more seriously because they know what they're looking for in the writing.
4. When it's too complicated to explain, we add the visual.

Is this something I want other people reading?

4b) The purpose of peer review should be getting an outside perspective from someone who will be honest with your work. Below is an example of a troll review by the famous Ken M.

4E) We use peer reviews to add to our papers something that may have been overlook or is missing. Instructor review tends to be taken more seriously than peer review.

4j) Media is used to enhance what the paper is trying to express, mainly through real life examples.

Read out loud, and if it sounds strange, rewrite it.
4B: Peer review shouldn't be harsh, and just minor mistakes. Should be honest, and make sure the work makes sense to other people as well.
4E,G,I: You use the feedback given to you to alter your paper to make it better. With peer feedback, it is more informal changes. With teachers, the changes being done are more important.
4J:Visuals are used with research, typically.

We usually use peer review more liberally then instructor feedback which we hold to a higher standard.
4)We decide we need extra visuals if we see that words can not fully give the subject matter justice.

Peer review should be constructive and helpful. It should not be completely negative, without any feedback to improve.
3. We use feedback by taking into consideration by changing mistakes in your work.Enhancing those paragraphs that need work. There really is no difference between peer versus teacher review, because we take both very seriously.
4. We use visuals when they help support the topic that we are talking about.

The purpose of peer review is to gain insight from external sources about your work. Peer review should have multiple critiques if necessary. Peer review shouldn't attack the writer personally.
3. Implementing some of the feedback in the writing. Considering if the feedback is relevant. More often than not, instructor feedback is implemented more than peer feedback.
4. The visuals will be included if they contribute to the writing in a meaningful way.

Peer review allows a writer to get a different perspective into their writing.
4e-4g. When feedback is given you must take it with a grain of salt. Not everybody has the right to speak when it comes to feedback. You ,just use your discretion and prior knowledge to decipher what feedback is adequate or not.
4j. It is important to use visuals and media in your writing when it contributes to your main idea.

1. Does what I'm saying convey the message I'm trying to send? Is there evidence supporting what I'm saying, and is my argument sound? Critical self talk...
2. To have a new set of eyes on the work, by having a new perspective the strengths and weaknesses in the paper become more clear. Peer review should be productive and provide clarity, as well as help with organizational structure.
3. It can be helpful or distracting depending on the editor, usually feedback from peers is taken more with a grain of salt.
4. If it connects with the topic and seems relevant, and helps to build upon or support what you've written then including media could be helpful, in more personal writings there is less need for adding these elements for reasons other than entertainment.
