Jocasta:

Jocasta, although not spiritually, maintains most of her composure throughout the story’s feud. The buddha statue holds flowers, similar to Odipus’, staying in a calm state; can possibly be interpreted as blissful ignorance in the way that its face is forever frozen in stone. To change its expression, one would have to completely destroy the idol; a tragedy, some might say.

I chose a figeater (beetle) to represent Oedipus as they have been common recently and tend to terrorize people by flying into them. Figeaters and other large scarab/June beetles tend to boldly fly into large crowds of people in attempts to land, which represents how Oedipus blindly seeks the answer to his birth without regarding the health and safety of him and the others around him. I also choose the fig eater beetle as the shiny, metallic green reminds me of royalty as Oedipus is in a position of power.

Oedipus is like a car; although it can be advantageous, it can also cause great harm if used incorrectly. For instance, a car can get you places faster than almost anything, but if you misuse a car you can get into crashes and even kill people. Oedipus can be very helpful and solve many problems like how he solved the sphinx’s riddle, but if he gets angry he acts irrationally like how he calls Creon a traitor when he was not.

Tiresias provides the audience with the truth about Oedipus, and prophecies regarding the fate of Oedipus and those around him. As seen through the validity of his prophecies, Tiresias is a giver of truth and guidance. The Sun is a symbol of light, and as seen in Oedipus the King, light is associated with truth, and darkness is associated with uncertainty. I chose the solar eclipse to symbolize the light Tiresias provides, and the darkness around him.

Much like a rock is rooted in its soil, Oedipus is rooted in his beliefs, often to the extreme, causing him to be blind to the truth. Like this rock with its sharp edge, Oedipus can be aggressive when he lashes out, making irrational decisions. He often uses his anger as a defense mechanism when criticized by anyone, including those he trusts. Additionally, just as the moss has taken over this rock, Oedipus' ego can take over his rational decision-making skills, blinding him to the right decisions and steering him toward the wrong ones.

This piano symbolizes Jocasta, because it is harmonious and fair, but also peaceful, which Jocasta is. In the play, Jocasta is just and fair and listens to both the sides of the argument before making a decision, and lets both defend themselves. Jocasta tries to keep the peace, even if it is her brother and husband fighting. When Oedipus and Creon are fighting, Jocasta listens to both of them before coming to a resolution. The piano also represents harmony with its sweet melody and peaceful grace. Jocasta is similar to this because she manages to find harmony and peace in the midst of the argument between Oedipus

The darkness represents his literal blindness and the light is his wisdom and knowledge which allows him to see despite his blindness.

The broken glass symbolically represents Oedipus's “blindness”. The broken glass relates to blindness because just a glass can be easily broken into pieces,it also relates to Oedipus's story of not being able to find the answer he was looking for,due to him being too prideful and arrogant, when all along, the true problem that was occurring in the story, was himself. That’s why broken glass represents Oedipus, because something so strong like Oedipus, can break like glass due to him having his own flaws.

As the brother of Jocasta and an important figure in Thebes, Creon represents a reasoned approach to governance, opposing Oedipus' impulsiveness. A bee symbolizes rationality in nature. With trash, you never want to take it out and you dread the fact that inevitably you will get a full trash can and have to throw it out. This represents Jocasta and her battle with fate.

A clock tells the time, and will keep ticking no matter what happens. Nothing you can do will stop the inevitability of time, similar to Tiresias’s prophecies. Jocasta and the king did everything they could to get rid of their baby, and Oedipus got as far away as he could from his parents, but in the end they couldn’t run away from their prophecies, just like as much as you may try to run from time it will always catch up to you.

I would say Tiresias is like a tree. He's a tree because he is calm and collected and that's the vibe a tree gives off. He also goes where he is called and a tree sways with the wind. Tireseas is very knowledgeable and underrated. I feel like trees are also underrated because they provide oxygen and are just beautiful in general.

The weed represents Oedipus because it starts off as a beautiful little flower sprouting from a destroyed dirt pile but later begins to grow until it covers the concrete foundation of the road. Unable to save itself because of its overgrowth, the plant starts to die. Oedipus arrives at Thebes and becomes the savior by solving a riddle. This was the beginning of his growth. He later became king and ruled for his people, which represented the growth of the plant. When the plague hit, Oedipus was determined to find the truth, but he could not match the pieces together before his blindness to the truth killed him first. He later ended up killing his pride and lifestyle with his ignorance.

A tree can notify people what’s coming; if it is shaking violently, there is likely a rapid storm coming, if it is black and charred it has likely been burned, and if it is discolored and nasty there is likely a disease nearby. Tiresias, although he can’t see, can tell a great deal about what is to come. Tiresias's voice can be similar to the insightful characteristics of a tree and how it can tell us humans what is to come.

It is an essential part of the existence of a plant, and just as important as the seeds themselves. However, when someone sees a gorgeous flower or tree, they don’t think about the water that was used to make the plant thrive in the first place. Similarly, Creon has just as much power in ruling Thebes as Oedipus. However, Oedipus is the one that gets all of the credit and gets the title of being king.
