1ST LAW

A ball is flying across a room, towards a person. The person is able to catch the ball before the ball hits them, making the ball stationary. This is Newton’s first law in play. Newton’s first law states that an object in motion will stay in motion in a straight line, until acted upon by another force. In this case, a high speed ball was able to lose all its inertia (the type of energy an object current has until acted upon) when caught.

Someone is riding their bike on a park sidewalk. They cut into the grass for a bit, and their bike loses almost all of its momentum, no matter how hard the person pedals. This is yet another example of Newton’s first law stopping a moving object. But instead of a ball coming to a sudden halt by another force stopping the object, this scenario is a bit different. That’s because the friction of the grass, (friction: the roughness of a certain surface. the friction of a surface can affect how fast and smooth an object moves across it.) gradually stops the bikes wheels as the roughness stops it. That’s why a smooth sidewalk is a better idea to ride on.

2ND LAW

A monster truck and family sedan are on the road. Both apply the same amount of gas to their car. (100N) Despite them both applying the same amount of force to their cars, the sedan moves faster than the monster truck. That’s because an object with a higher mass (mass: the amount of material contained in an object. For example, a monster truck will have more mass than a sedan)

needs more force to move as much as an object with a lower mass. That’s why the sedan is going faster.

A wagon, with the only forces being applied to it being gravity and the inertia of the cart, has a net force of 100N going right. It is about to run into a person facing left, who can apply a force of 110N to the left by pushing the cart. So, the two forces cancel out each other, with the net force on the cart ultimately being 10N to the left. This is a perfect example of both acceleration in terms of direction and speed. Newton’s second law deals with acceleration, the change in a moving object’s direction and speed. Our cart did just those two things when the person pushed it, as it decelerated and had a change in speed, while also going a new direction as well.

3RD LAW

Let’s say Mike and his daughter both go roller skating one day at the skatepark. Mike is going to push his daughter so she can gain some speed, as she is having some troubles going on her own. (IMPORTANT NOTE: BOTH HAD THEIR ROLLER SKATES ON WHILE THEY WERE PUSHING) Let’s also say that Mike’s mass is 100, and his daughters mass is 10. When mike pushes on his daughter, she goes forward on her skates really far. Mike also goes back a little bit, but not as far. Newton’s third law states that forces both happen in equal and opposite pairs. Basically, what it means is that the amount of force one object applies to an object will always have the same force on the object that enacted the force. Ergo, Mike, when pushing his daughter, also exerted the same amount of force on himself. This also ties back to Newton’s first law, as Mike did not go as far with the same amount of force exerted on him.

Tracey is doing the backstroke for her swim team finals, when she has to push her arms to go forward. She notices on the replay of her big face off that the water pushes back from her whenever she strokes back in order to get more distance. Again, another example of Newton’s third law. Again, the interactions between two objects forces will always be equal, meaning that when Tracey pushes the water back during her backstroke, the water applies equal force to her to make her go. This simple law makes it possible for her to gain distance while swimming.

A Body in motion stays in motion unless a force acts on it upon on, we did this by one of us running into the other person. When I had run into Evan I had stayed in motion until he put force on me, that’s when I stopped. The only reason why I stopped moving was because there was a force being out on me. If Evan didn’t put force on me I wouldn’t have stopped and I would have just ran into him. This is how we demonstrated Newton’s first law of motion.

Newton’s second law of motion is force= mass x acceleration. We demonstrated Newton’s second law by me pushing Tony lightly and then harder later on. This demonstrated my mass when used with more acceleration will push tony harder and faster backward. Therefore demonstrating Newton’s second law of motion. Now on to number 3.

Newton’s third law of motion is when a force applying can be equal in magnitude and opposite direction. Me and Evan demonstrated this by putting an equal amount of force and the opposite happened. We both pushed each other and I stayed in the same motion while Evan moved back. The reason why Evan moved back and I didn’t was because it was equal force but opposite direction. These are all the examples we demonstrated and had in our videos.
