KWL charts can be used in any content area (not just ELA!) when introducing a new topic. 

For example, below is a modified KWL chart created by New Visions for Public Schools. This KWLS chart is included in their curriculum resources for Living Environment, however it could be used across contents to introduce any text.

  • Students share what they know about a topic, which allows teachers to see what content knowledge they already have, and look out for any gaps in knowledge. 
  • Some barriers will be with students who say, “I don’t know,” or are not motivated to engage in the content. The goal with these students is to encourage them and help them realize any background knowledge is valuable (ex: students don't know about cold fronts & warm fronts, but have experienced a thunderstorm; real-life experience is just as important!)
